Betta Mistreated, I've Taken It In. Attempting Rehab. Help?

Love the videos, he is a sweet old man :)

A very lucky retirement for him :D

LOL  Don't worry about doubting me.  I don't know everything.  Bettas fins grow their fins throughout their lives so you can sometimes guess an age with some of them  by looking at the fins.  Especially with veiltails like Gus here.  Plakats and other shorter finned ones are a lot harder though.  LOL  I love the grumpy old man faces that bettas have.  :)

I'm glad you're not offended Wildbetta. :)

You certainly seem to know a lot!

I was just wondering.. What temperature should I be aiming for in this tank?

I've had it around 25.5-C at the moment.

Should I trun it up a little to help with his tail? Or is that warm enough?

I've also ordered some Indian Almond Leaves for him. :)

I would put it somewhere around 26 - 27 C (80-82F).  That will help promote his fin regrowth plus bettas just do better at those temps.  IAL will definitely be a good idea as well for him.  :)

@Wildbetta

Do you personally like the tannis that's IAL might produce for the tank?  I know it's natural for bettas, but some fishkeepers are intent on clear water.  What do you prefer?

I personally prefer the darker the "tea" color the better.  To me it really brings out the color in the fish plus they love it.  I have had some really dark tannin rich tanks before and the bettas seem to "glow" almost.

Thank you so so much for all your help, Wildbetta. Youre an sbsolute legend.

Changing the temp now. :)

I like the way tannins look too, though I'd always thought it came from the wood in tanks.. I hadn't heard of IAL, until this thread. Im glad I know now! :) Do you recon I'll need to watch that the plants are getting enough light once the tannins start leaching? I might need to get him a proper light set up..

This morning I found bubbles on the top of his tank, tests showed marcos all fine, and the surface doesn't get any agitation from the filter or anything...

Do you recon he was blowing them? Practising bubble nests?

A sign of something gone wrong?

I did a 20% water change just in case...

If you changed the temperature recently, it could be dissolved gases evolving from your tank.  Betta nests are at the surface, clumped together.

Yeah that looks like just gas bubbles. They are harmless and will go away soon on their own.

Ah, that's probably it. Though I dunno why that would have shown up overnight.. The major temp change happened a few days ago. :s

But yay! Nothing to worry about. :)

He's beautiful, congrats on your rescue. I have mopani wood in mine I love the dark tea colour I have in there. You're eyes get accustomed to the colour and it's not until you do a water change you realise how dark the water actually is!

I put some IAL into his tank on my way out of the door this morning, he looked pretty intrigued.. :) I'm going to be home in a bit. Can't wait to see if the tannins have started leeching.

Did you give them a good rinse off first?

Vader loves his :D
