Fresh-Water Newbie

I keep mine on from 3pm to 9 pm - I bought a timer for it. Best choice I made... I don't have to worry about forgetting about turning the lights on or off at a specific time. Also, when I went away for a night last weekend I didn't have to worry about the plants not getting enough light (nor did I worry about the fish being fed... they are fine for a few days without food). :D

Those Corys will nead meaty pellets eventually.. all the cats can eat after lights off.

6-10 hours of light (get a timer, it's easier on you and the fish) is about the average for most people.

I agree with that regarding the cories.... I feed them shrimp pellets and algae wafers on alternating days.

You poor thing

I don't know what that is on the left. The one on the right (or any number of incarnations of it) is what I run on most of my tanks. Heck, give it a good scrub and see what happens!

the one on the left is some kind of old style small whisper. the one on the right only has that 1" tube to collect water, i figured the newer whisper would cycle more water. i also realized that it hangs on the back of the tank, pushing it out away from the wall, prob get a new whisper anyway lol.

i also just resealed my first aquarium, went BEAUTIFULLY. removed the old sealant and put in perfect straight lines of sealant and looks factory. i have to say that "i rule" haha..

im going to start a fish-less cycle tmrw after giving this silicone time to dry fully. i read the write up twice and would like to "hurry along" the process if i can. i was wondering if i could take one of the filters out of my 55gal (i have 2 whispers with large filter pads) and use to start up the 29gal? or is that tank not "settled" enough to take one of them? might see if i can get one from somewhere if not. advice? i also would prefer it not to fill with brown algae lol.

I don't think your 55 is settled enough to pull mature media from it and add to your new tank.

You know how you could convince me it's a viable option? Do complete testing of water in the 55 and post your results. Not only the results, but the make and model of the filter you're using on the 55.

The more we know, the more you know.

posted water results earlier today, using 2 large whisper filters. going to use 1 large whisper in the 29gal.
