Hi,

i was wondering what the 2 red patches are that my white micky mouse platy has developed. They were definatly not there before, she has also now got abit of a belly on her. Am i possibly over feeding her? all my other fish appear normal.. i'll attatch a picture & hopefully you'll reply with some of your advise.

are you talking about a patch in the same place on both sides? looks like a preg belly to me, not far along tho :)

Just to let you know, i found two fry in my tank on Friday and my Platy looked like yours. I'm assuming that her gravid spot never became black like others because there was such few fry inside her.

as an update, i thought i'd let u guys no my platy is doing fine & turns out she is pregnant. i knew the gravid spots was supposed 2 be black but got confused wen a big red patch developed. cuz shes white shes quite see thru in the hood light when near the surface, i can see little blue/green eyes wiv the black dot in the middle.. she should drop any day now woo hoooo :D

The reason why the gravid patch appears black is due to the developing dark eyes of the fry inside the mother fish (thus the more the pregnancy progresses the darker the patch becomes as the fry become more & more developed). A pink/orange/red gravid patch area is common in;
a. A fish that has recently given birth to all the fry within her.
b. A fish that is not pregnant at all and/or has never been pregnant.
c. A fish that is in the very early stages of pregnancy.
d. A fish that has recently aborted or re-absorbed all her fry (can happen when the fish are under great stress or are in a completely unsuitable environment, like bad water quality conditions etc).

heya! just to let u all know i found 4 little fry swimmimg in my tank.. managed 2 capture 3 of them whilst the otha 1 has gone rogue in my big rock & plants so hopefully it will be okay. just another quick question, will she give birth again in about a months time? or is that it now?>

hi everyone, am new to this site but i have a major problem,i have 6 female guppies and 1 male, all 6 of them are heavily pregnant, but as soon as i put 1 in a breeding tank,it seems to lose its big stomache and doesnt look pregnant at all,then the next day its got its massive belly again as though its gona give birth right away, so i left it for a couple of days and tried again but the same thing happens again,its been 2 months now and non of them have given birth, everything is right in my tank,the ammonia,nitrate ph levels, water changes please help. :sad:

Welcome to the forum Crazybowtfish.
A swollen belly on a female guppy that fluctuates daily is the result of being well fed, not carrying fry. We don't have any fish keeping history to go on with you. Are you new to livebearers? If you are, there are some decent threads posted at the top of this section that are intended to walk you through things to look for besides simple size.
