Hi everyone, up till now i have always enjoyed tropical fish, viewing marine tanks as far too much hassle.... Now however i've had a change of mind, all my tropical fish were packed up and goodbyes said, they went to a good home, a friend had lost her fish in a move and was overjoyed when i gave them to her.
Back to the tank, after a good scrub and removal of all things tropical i laid a bed of tropical marine coral sand with some ooglit stuff in it, got the right concentration of salt over a few days. today i put a couple of pieces of live rock in with a lucky cheap purchase of rock that had been out of the lfs tanks a couple of months and they had just decided to sell it off. Here's a few pics.
I'd love comments and pointers please

:hi: crazysilverfox to the salty side :good:

Rock is looking nice, how much have you got in there and what are your plans? But, that background just has to go  :p

Yeah background def going. There's about 15kg of rock in there at the moment the misses likes it so may leave it for a bit. Just waiting for the tank to cycle. Then I'm getting the clean up crew.

You need approx another 7k to filter your tank :good: get it now, you dont want to have two cycles

What is recomended for filter media on a marine tank, in my external filter i have phosphate, nitrite nitrate remover and those polo things and carbon at the moment, i understand small pieces of live rock must go in but what else and what should i take out?
help needed. #43###

live rock is your biological filtration in a saltwater tank. You dont need any biological media, such as "those little polo things"(ceramic media) aslong as you have enough live rock.

Most use externals to run chemical filtration media, such as the phosphate remover, or/and active carbon.

As you have mentioned, you could use live rock rubble, but i dont think this is neccesary if you have enough live rock in the tank, its just going to clogg up with waste over time and cause you nitrate problems.

thanks

Thanks for that, what takes care of the mechanical filtration then?

Normally your clean up crew, which consists of small crabs, snails and shrimp etc, they'll polish off any detritus and left over food, some also run an external filled with phosphate removing resin, granular carbon to remove any impurities and some floss to catch the finer particles.

I also recommend you run a protein skimmer if you're not all ready, it will remove fats, proteins and other scum from the water, which should reduce the chance of any nitrate build ups.

you can use sponges/filter floss, but you need to make sure that you wash(wash to kill)them every week to ensure they dont become biological. Say, if you had 2 sponges, use 1 at any time, every week just rotate them, letting the one taken out dry out completely to kill any bacteria.

Well going to get some more LR tonight, another 10-15kg on seffie advice, with the comments about filtration and a bit of online research i think i have a better understanding, my skimmer should arrive tomorrow, the ViaAqua Multi Skimmer II Deluxe With UV. My power head is also on route. so i think i'll have to wait a few more days for the new LR to cycle.

Day 4 Tank results
Nitrate 0-5ppm
Phosphate 5ppm ( this has been coming down for four days, TW high in Nitrate and Phosphate )
KH 12dKH
Calcium 520ppm
PH 7.7
Anything i should worry about with these results (nitrate and phosphate are being reduced)

Cheers for your ongoing help

Looks like you are well and truly in your cycle :good: what are your ammonia and nitrite readings?

To bring your ph up aim a powerhead to the surface to agitate the water.

Looking forward to seeing the extra live rock - it will make all the difference

Yeah new rock in, comments please,
Ammonia and Nitrite unknown at present, kit i bought did not have those tests, a little peeved.
Easily sorted lfs tomorrow, more money

Even with those readings, theres LIFE in my tank, a 2mm snail must have taken a ride on the LR i bought, no idea why but me and the misses loved seeing it climb the glass. :hyper:
would show but i can't get a camera to take a picture of something so small
