I bought these last year and didn;t take to them at fist as they were very shy, I moved them into another tank on a temprary basis as I was selling them andtheyseem far happier in there even though the rules are being broken as to their upkeep. I'd only just put lights on so they were not as colourful as they are at night

The Orientalis wouldn;t come out to be photgrahed as they hide in the plant br feeding time at night. I'll have to split them at some point as they shouldn't be together but its working for now

They're very pretty.

What do you mean you broke a rule? :shifty:

they're subtropical yet they're in slightly warmer water than that with a tropical type Orientalis. Thing is they didn't do well in the colder temp when I had thm in there own tank

my assams are doing great. I have 6, 1 male grew a lot bigger a lot quicker than the others and when i went home 1 day to find 1 of the smaller ones in its mouth, it lived, is happy, consequently the larger one is in a seperate tank with some tomasai dwarf cichlids. I believe i have left in the assam set up, 2 males, 1 of which is bigger and more colourful, obviously the more dominant one, they do occasionally have disagreements but the smaller 1 is submissive and so never ends up in a fight just chases it out of its space. And 3 females, which have less of the characteristic metalic blue and more of the orange spots/blotches. Im hoping they will show signs of breeding soon as the dominant male has coloured up a lot and 1 particular female is becoming 'plump' so fingers crossed! They live happily with a trio of tiny clown loach's about an inch long and a goldring butterfly loach. I went to bas yesterday and picked up 2 channa bleheri. About 5 inch in length. There was only the 2 this size, a few about 4 inch and about 20 or so about the same size the assams were when you got them from bas. I know you wanted the bleheri in the first place so i thought id let you know. Also andy, the main guy at bas told me to go back in march as they are getting about ten different rare species of the smaller channa if your intrested in keeping some different species, i know i am so il be going. They have a 5 inch ornatipinnis, i would got a pair but there was only 1 left, not bad at £30 though, and a group of nice pulchra at about 6 inch for about £20 each. Il try get some decent pics of the assams and their set up and the bleheris i picked up.

Hi Dave

I kept them as you can see. They are hppy in the warmer water are yours in warmer water as well.

I am interested in the channas so will take a trip up to BAS when you say!! I've got 6 pulchra that are coming on well the are in another thread I postred last week called My Tanks. They are my favourites .. so much character and beautiful in a different way to the assams

I'll look forward to your pics

Thank's mate these are sexy, I shall be scoring sp assam a male and female 6inch from another sorce for a couple of my ornate fry :hey:
These are great, if and when i go to colombia my sister is getting very intrested in these, i find my ornate at the happiest at 21c

I may also be scoring 3 x pleuro approx 4"
and 1 obscura at around 4"

Iam getting really addicted to these beauty's :hey:

Shall re-home the other fish, get these guy's then if and when i go again my sister seems happy to have these guys

mine are at 24 celcius. i think 2 are definately pairing off they spend all their time swimming next to each other and sitting in the bushy plants at the top! fingers crossed. i have bad news though! during the night i can only assume my dog had jumped up at the tank and knocked the lid, because it was half off this morning with a dried up channa bleheri in the middle of my living room! quite p****d off as you can imagine. gonna email andy at bas and see if theres any chance of ordering some larger bleheri with his next lot.
anyway, yeahi saw some pulchra at bas, they are very nice, like you said in a different way to the assams. very similar to the ornatipinnis just with smaller black spots. i really want a little group or ornatapinnis, iv got 2 three footers on the way and i'm definately setting 1 up for ornatapinnis and the other for some rare snakeheads, something like the sp. platinum, a breeding programme! i should get some work done on the new fish house this summer so i,m possibly going to dedicate the space to dwarf snakeheads.
yer get yourself to bas in about half way through march and make sure you have a few tanks spare! i'll be sticking them under my bed and in the wardrobe! lol
hugo the doberman has been restricted to the back room now! i told him that he'd get sold before i got rid of the tank so he better behave!
im just gonna go and watch and feel sorry for the lonely bleheri :(

people can only work off their own experience, if the assams was kept in cooler waters and didn't seem to like it, ie laying motionless, dark colors and no interaction what so ever, would you keep them like that or try and experiment to get it exactly how they like it? personally i would and have found a temperature which they are very happy at, i know this due to the intense coloration of both the males and females, their activities and general liveliness. mine are kept at 24 Celsius which is higher than is generally advised but lower than a general aquarium. i know we are to simulate winter by dropping the temperature at certain times of the year but couldn't you say this with all tropical fish as there are not many countries in the world with water staying at the exact same temperature 365 days a year? personally i would of thought that snakeheads, being a lot hardier than your average tropical / sub-tropical fish can live and thrive in many different water conditions and temperatures. maybe its just my assams that are odd? oh and simonas assams? coincidence? adaptation? what ever it is I'll carry on keeping snakeheads and other tropical fish for that matter how they like it.

sorry that i sounded like that. basically what i was trying to say is that yes 24 Celsius is higher that advised, but my fish are happier and live happier like this as i believe simonas do. i know and im pretty sure he does too that you have to simulate winter which i will do when needs be, and in turn this would stop any sort of skin infection that may otherwise form on the fish.
anyway i have more important fish to fry! my pink tailed characin just died so i'ma go tend to it!
Dave

cheers Dave and Karl

Karl whats happening with the snakehead forum do you know?

I'm hoping to make a concerted effort to breed my channas this summer so will sort them out with another tank of their own in the summer with cooler temperatures. Now there bigger and fatter they may get on better

I didnlt realise they got as big as 18cm!!! thats a surprise
