Ok this might sound odd but can corys get depressed?

I had 3 albino corys, very active for the first week, second week they calmed down and I got 3 new bronzes which are slightly larger to make 6.
Due to unknown circumstances one of the smaller albinos died,no damage to fins etc just stone dead at the bottom :(
Did a massive clean out, 80% water change alot of plants replaced and new stuff added like bogwood, caves and slate.
That night I noticed my betta chasing one of the larger corys so I moved him out. As id never seen him do it I put the first corys death down to stress.

Now more to the point the largest of the albinos "Fatso" seems depressed.
Hyper the smaller albino has joined the 3 bronzes. He will follow them around the tank, join the digging train and play with them but fatso he just sits in various spots just breathing. Not rapid just the same as the others.

Sometimes they will bump into him or "sniff" around him and he just lays there oblivious to everything, if i get up and make alot of noise the group will scatter and hide but fatso again just sits..every now and then he will rocket to the surface for air and find a new spot to sit but thats really the limit of it.

Should I be worried or is he just taking longer to adjust or maybe hes very active in the early hours of the morning?

Water stats are
0 Ammo
0 Nitrite
20 Nitrate (come out the tap like it)
PH 7.6
Temp 24 degrees

Hi Johnlenham :)

It's too bad that your little albino died. :-( Bettas can be sneaky sometimes, but that just depends on the individual betta. I used to have one that loved the corys and he even followed them into their cave to sit with them. The only way to tell is by trial and error. It's good that you were able to move him to another place.

I hope your cory, "Fatso" is OK. Give him a little while to get over the stress of having the betta in there and he might just snap out of it and join the others. As long as he's eating and has proper balance with now damaged fins, let's hope for the best and wait and see.

Please let us know how things turn out.

Hi,

My personal view to the death of you cory would be due from stress.

From my experience of my male beta, was. He was in my 130ltr tank at first, but got fin nipped from black neons and harliquins.
So I moved into my empty 70ltr tank on his own, feeling sorry for him being alone I got 3 bronze corys. They got on fine, so after a couple of weeks I got 3 Sterbai. Week later 1 Sterbai dead, I at first put this down to stress from moving from lfs to tank. Until the 2nd one died a few days later.

Then I finaly seen what the problem was, the last Sterbai was beeing harassed by my beta. Left the bronze alone, always flaring at the Sterbai.
So I moved him out, beta started on the bronze then, to witch i'm glad to say ignored the nasty little red **** until he has given up on flaring at them and chasing them and have spawned twice with him in there with them.

Maybe if you get another few albinos she will perk up a bit.

Hey folks :)

Hes perked up abit but still abit of a loner. He just sits about but Ive spotted him eating and he seems to like coming to the very front of the tank and looking out at me which is odd but amusing and hes not hiding in the plants any more but sitting out in the open so hopefully hes on the mend.

Th betta was a really sneaky sod, I had no idea he was bullying them but I imagine it happened at night as I never saw anything short of him coming up and looking at them before leaving but that night he really went for the largest one and I freaked!

They have all improved massively since, much more active and going around all heights of the tank and theyve all got a sort of green shimmer to there gills which I never noticed at the shop. Lovely fish :good:

Oh good point about more albinos. I was thinking just to replace the deceased one making it 3 for 3 though saying that the other albino seems to have become an honorary bronze

Hi Johnlenham :)

I'm glad your big bronze has improved. Corys are so friendly that they just don't understand what's going on when another fish isn't that way too.

...and theyve all got a sort of green shimmer to there gills which I never noticed at the shop. Lovely fish

I'm glad you said that because relatively few people comment about how beautiful a bronze cory really is. If you look at them quickly you might think they are just gray. They really have a variety of colors, but they are subtle and sometimes hard to see in artificial light. :D

Took some pics of them at feeding time as they've become quite shy of late.
Fatso the one I posted about is the one is on the coconut

Hi Johnlenham :)

They're beautiful corys!

But is that red I'm seeing on the 4th picture down, or is that just the way the camera made it look?

Yeah its just the largest one that has it. Let me guess not good? Ive tried looking it up but not found anything water stats are again the same from OP temps 23oc and feed hikari wafers :S

oh and the camera has brightened it up, its much more pinky then blood red. I thought that may be aeration issue but if the others are fine then maybe not?

Oh dear this dosent sound good.....
"If the cory has septicemia (internal infection--shows up as red streaks/spots under the skin, often at the base of the fins), then he has a bacterial infection and needs an antibiotic."

Hi Johnlenham :)

If you think it could just be the camera, then don't worry about it. Keep an eye on him for other symptoms though. Watch his behavior, and look for any developing fin or barbel damage. He's new and there is always a risk that he might have been coming down with a bacterial infection at the lfs.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that all is well with him. :D

As ive said he/she is the most active one in the tank, allways busy foraging or playing

Is it possible its just the colour of his skin? much like how one of my albinos are almost bleach white and the other is more yellow? this is something someone else suggested.

Really hope its nothing

Hi Johnlenham,

I think your camera has high lighted the red, I've just looked at mine and they have that pink colour to.
So hopefully nothing to worry about.

I'm betting Fatso is a female:)

Ah ok well thats put me at ease abit lol

Now bit of a random question but how can you tell if a cory has Ich?

I mean I spend way to much time researching things to improve my limited knowledge but ich can look like sand/salt right? and corys dig in the sand most of the day so they must kick it up and onto themselves or is it a pure white like say washing power so how do you tell?

And if they did have it what temp would it be safe to go to with Bronzes? and you use a half does because there scale less right?

Heres the albino that sits about alot just breathing and why i think its possible he has Ick, would certainly explain his behaviour.
I have some treatment hopefully arriving tomorrow "INTERPET Aquarium Treatment 6 Anti Whitespot"
Sorry to keep using this thread but it saves me making like 30

Hi Johnlenham :)

I don't like the way that albino looks at all. If you're sure those spots on it aren't just sand, then it does look like ich. Corys are very resistant to it, but it could happen. Be sure before you treat it because the treatment requires raising the temperature and that will make a bacterial infection worse if that's what is really going on in your tank.
