What kind of heater is that that is fully submersive? All the ones Ive ever seen have a water line.

Yeah, thanks guys. I really like him too. Yeah, the heater is a fully submergeable. I'm not sure what kind it is though, joltnbolt may be right though. I had been planning to unplug it when it got to the right temp but the heater has been keeping the watter in the middle green range so I think I'll just leave it plugged in. Hopefully I'll find something smaller so that its not so ugly. I'm still not pleased with those pictures... they are pretty cloudy..

just get some live or silk plants to hide the heater, and I think your betta would love the plants to sleep on and hide in.

If those are real seashells you need to remove them. I know they are pretty but they can harm/kill your fish.

I never like to give out this type of information without credit to back it up (since it's a big accusation), so here's what I've read about putting shells in freshwater tanks. (I have some really nice coral and shells that I wanted to do it with too..that's how I know lol).

I have recently been given some coral and some seashells from my father, who harvested it from the waters around Jamaica over 30 years ago. He has kept them clean, dry and isolated since, but recently offered to give them to me to use in my tank. My question is whether or not I can use these items as decorations in my tank.
<Unfortunately, since your tank is freshwater, I'm afraid the answer is no. They would be absolutely fine to use in a freshwater rift lake cichlid tank, a brackish tank, or a saltwater tank, but in your tank, they will raise the pH undesirably, and possibly harm your fish as a result.

Question - Hi,
I have a fish tank at home and I was wondering if I put a sea shel in
the tank with out washing it off with out soap would it make him die?
Because one of my Batta fish died.~

Dear Brittney,

I've read in some aquarium manuals that sea shells shouldn't be used for decorating
freshwater aquariums because the calcium carbonate mineral that they are composed of will
be dissolved by the aquarium water. This will cause the water to become
"harder", & some freshwater fish might been sensitive to high levels of this
mineral. This is not a problem in saltwater tanks because there's already calcium
carbonate in the saltwater at fairly high levels, so the sea shells wouldn't be dissolved
as quickly, & the fish are used to that mineral anyway.

It's a little hard to believe that 1 seashell could have this toxic of an effect on your
fish, but betas might be especially sensitive to hard water.

In any case, I wouldn't recommend using sea shells in your freshwater tank anymore, but
you're probably already taking that precaution,

Other cheap decorations include rocks, pebbles and small clay flower pots. A small clay pot actually looks quite cute, either lying empty on its side, or with a small plant in it. Don't use seashells in a freshwater tank, the calcium carbonate will gradually dissolve.

Not all decorations are suitable for freshwater aquariums. Coral, seashells, limestone & marble will dissolve in freshwater & may increase the pH to unacceptable levels.

I had a 10 gallon divided and with two bettas once that was running perfectly, my sister gave me shells to put in, i washed them out as good as i could and put them in. My bettas died within the week.

My heater is under the water shouldnt be but keeps falling off only stays in this place,
Nice betta by the way

I was just going to say to take them out, they could also be causing the cloudy water and I they will raise your ph.

our heater is completley submergable, it switches on if the temp drops and turns itself off if it rises. really clever!!!! never knew heaters could do that till someone kindly informed me, well i was having a blonde day!!!

Well these shells weren't picked up along a beach. They are real but they were bought at a store. And they are clean. Do you think they can still cause problems? The water isn't cloudy, it's just the picture. Oh, bell rang, have to go to class now!

Yeah when my shells caused problems for my tank I looked up information on it. Obviously I cant link you to what I found because it was about 2 years ago but basically you can not use shells in a freshwater tank-at all.

Oh, that sucks... now I have to find something else to put in it... Does anybody have any suggestions? It can't be something you have to go buy cause I have no money at the moment and my parents wouldn't pay for it. So probably something can be found around the house.
