Hullo,

I just looked at my 4 Zebra Ds that I bought a few weeks ago.

One of them has a large bulge in its abdomen, similar to a very pregnant guppy.

Should I move her and two others to a seperate tank?

Hi,

I'm a newbie to fish keeping at home but I work in a zebra danio lab (where I breed and take care of them on a daily basis) so I think I have some knowledge & experience - although as always, take everyone's advice with a pinch of salt ;)

Anyway, I just answered a similar sort of question earlier on this post:

Do your fish look a bit like the fish in the picture? Usually zebra danios seem to be fine with laying eggs normally but sometimes the females just don't lay unless they are put into a tank with shallow water. I think it's something with how they breed in the wild. Anyway, it's something to try if the female continues to look very big!

I hope that helps,
Frida :)

hi there im in a similar situation, lets say i rescued some zebra danions theres def 1 female and one male and i think another female but they were really out of condittion. the female has a huge belly and has red bits the male is slender and more yelloe. the female is terrorising the male all day long and he rarely responds what should i do to end this cycle?

thanks

Generally the males are the ones that are problematic but I've sometimes seen that the females (like you are) can be really aggressive, especially in the breeding tanks. In those cases I usually alter the sex ratio (more males than females) and hope they breed... I'm not sure what you mean about the females being out of condition? Sorry this is not being much help...

Oh one thing I forgot to mention is that it's a good idea to match up the fish sizes if you put them in a breeding tank. Otherwise the big ones will just bully the small ones without mating!
