Its wrong bit time. You can buy mice as pets from a pet store, keep them for years and love them. Thats like going to the pet store and getting some goldfish to feed your cat, you just wouldnt do it.

i think you might if your cat only fed on live goldfish!

I still think that feeding mammals to an aquarium fish is wrong, however, buying feeder goldfish or feeder minnows and such is a much more saneful way of feeding them, we all have done it sometime, whether it be a fry getting eaten or feeding your cichlids rosy reds. But feeding them an intelligent mammal is just simply wrong. I have no problem with pirahnas, they eat, like any other creature on this planet, but when given the situation of feeding them something like a mouse, that changes things, stick to frozen or feeder fish. Its not so much negativeness on the pirahnas themselves, its more in the responsibility of the owner and their actions that make these fish seem so "nasty and scary to keep" in the average joe's eyes.

It wants removing from the net as it encourages people who have no respect for living animals, to do it in the name of fun.

im not saying this is ok but some animals WONT eat dead things i knew a bloke that had a snake, it would only eat live rabbits

Yea I meant Black Rhom

As for keeping. I would like an easy to keep one to start and one that isn't exactly "expensive". I expect to pay money for all of these, but as much as I hear good about RBs being good for beginners. I don't want to conform with the "beginner" fish and try something a bit harder and a bit more "fun to keep". I think that made sense lol. Basically, I like the Black Rhoms I would like a fish that I can get away with keeping it in a small group (like 1-2) and it be fine. Something that will have character and something that tank setup won't be too difficult. I understand most piranha grow big to an extent. But I don't want one that requires too much space as I have big cichlid tanks that would need ot go into the house as well ;)

There are no piranhas I know of that can be kept safely in pairs. Even with rbp's the dominant one will usually kill off the weaker one.

Black Rhoms definitely have to be kept alone. They're even meaner with conspecifics. You'd eventually have to get a 150g tank or so with a full grown one but that would be years down the road.

Try a search for a S. sanchezi and see if you'd like that. Can be kept alone, (I know you want more than 1) but it would be fine for life in a 55g tank and has personality.

If you want 3 you could go with a Pygo shoal. How much are you willing to spend? Ternetzi's would be the best as far as aggressiveness and not being shy, caribe's would be the same as they are quite aggresive and Super Reds are nice and not as shy as LFS rbp's.

I think I might have misspoken lol. What I meant is that I would prefer keeping one (if posible- which you cleared it's not- keep 2) I would love ot keep a 55 gallon with a single piranha in it. Or go with a 150 with a rhom or something. I'll look up the S. sanchezi tomorrow as it is 1 am here and I'm a bit tired . Thansk for all the help and info.

first class reply!!!! :good: :good: but it must be remembered that some of these fish will not eat frozen or dead food.

but i feel you are quite right, feeding these things to your fish, may well be an evil you have to put up with. what is pervers, is using it, via video, to titilate the perverted, via yourtube. IMO

Just bumping this thread up!!! It's a great read (mostly Gatorbaits' posts) of the real facts behind piranhas!!! :good:

You didn't answer my question on how much you wanted to spend so I'll assume it's unlimited. ;)

If you want a single fish in a 55 for life the Sanchezi is great, like I mentioned but you could also go with a S. irritans which is in my Top3 of most aggressive piranhas. I've had a couple that would match any other piranha butin general they are a Top3. They can live in a 55 but they are rare and cost some money. I haven't looked in a couple years but you'd probably have to pay $150-175 for a 5" if you can find them. Aquascape and Shark Aquarium will get them in from time to time.

What piranhas do you know about? There are maculatus that are beautiful fish, spilo's, many species and the places i mentioned above are also brick and mortar stores by you, in NJ.

Oh, yea, the price would be unlimited. If I'm going to do something like this I'd do it "right" ;). See I know NOTHING of piranhas but that RBs are the most common I've seen that people keep. I would love a single piranha as that would make maintenance a bit easier for me. Here's a question, if given a big enough tank, could you keep more than 1 species together? Like what size tank would I need to keep say 3 different species of "schoaling" piranha together in peace, like mix the schoal a bit. I doubt its possible, but its worth to ask. I want to bring this to PM to keep from crowding the thread, but I think this info from my questions will help shed some light on piranhas that many don't know of.

I really like the look of a Black Rhom and am leaning towards that as my "little guy" as my second piranha I dive into. I apologize as I don't know all th scientific names, just some common names. Wimple piranhas are looking good to me as they are not "technically" a piranha and I could legally keep them in NY and them move them when I eventually move. Again, price wouldn't be an option, as I would make sure to carefully plan it all, so I would budget money accordingly. I'm fine with groups or single, though I think I'd prefer single as I don't want to go through the headache of smaller ones getting eaten and then having to replace and all that "fun" stuff. Single guys would make it easier as they couldn't kill anything if nothing is in the tank with them. Did I answer anything? I'm jsut so lost, but interested and don't know much.

To be honest 55 gallons is very excessive for a sanchezi, dont get me wrong a 4 foot long tank for a single fish is a lovely idea if you have the space and money but for a single 6" fish a standard 20g is pleanty big enough provided you do regular water changes and remove any uneaten food straight away.

This is my 20g sanchezi tank, it spends most of its time behind the wood so you cannot see the fish in the picture

Nice sanchezi, CFC. :good:

Neverbegone, if money is no option then for a single fish in an aquarium I would go with these 3 fish.

Xingu rhom

sanchezi

irritans.

The sanchezi and irritans can be kept in a 55g for life. Or like CFC mentioned in a smaller tank. I had a sanchezi in a 29 for quite a while. I just like the bigger tank because they look cool "patroling" their area and with the bigger tank mine would swim more and I could use powerheads that they loved to play in.

The rhom will be ok in a 55 for a couple years then will have to be upgraded but will probably be ok in a 120g for life.

a very interesting thread. thanks all.

i feel the info Gatorbaits, has given us on piranha may well be worth a sticky!! do any mods agree?

Now here's a catch, I have to actually move, then I have to find a good outlet to buy them from... researching away, :D
