Youngsters

I think its pointless as there are plenty of youngster on here that can fight their own corner  and some are very nasty to other members as it is. A member who is younger should be treated as an equal to any other member, the forum is safe to use for them it contains no adult material and only the occasional "SMUT" is found.

So if I were to want to protect my personal information by putting in an obviously phony birthday -- say 1 Jan 2006 -- I should be tagged? I have no problem telling you all that I am not actually 3 years 5 months old. I just am not going to put my real information on the Internet anywhere because it is just too easy today for bad things to happen with personal information.

The big point is that anyone can put whatever age they want into the box, so tagging people is essentially meaningless. And the biggest point has probably already been made that everyone deserves equal respect and attention and all that, regardless of age. And why pick 14 -- why shouldn't it be 15, or 13 or 12 or 18 or...? Many, many issues.

So, while I get the idea and I understand the frustration that prompted it, I think that in fairness to everyone it is an idea set aside. If someone is posting offensively or if someone is being too harsh (whether to an adult or younger person), then report those posts. Harshness should not be judged based on age -- just on content and that's it.

I personnally dont like this idea, anyone who is on here posting ( be it to ask for help, learn about the hobby, or give help) is mature enough to take answers.

i was 14 when i joined and i have learnt a great deal since ive been on here, it sometimes suprises people how knowledgeable young people can be.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. which I appreciate. Not sure if everyone "gets" what I am trying to say though???

My point was that there are some posters on here, who are much younger. I entitled the post "14 ish". as granted there is no way to accurately pinpoint anyone's ability (regardless of age), and maybe I am being naive, but my intention was to help, not hinder, or to suggest that young people do not give valid advice and opinions. My post certainly does not come from frustration, I have all the patience in the world, if it means that I can help someone, regardless of their age.

There are other forums, where being marked as a "teen" is beneficial, as it allows young people to identify each other, and chat. I don't think it detracts from the advice they give. and personally, I have been given very good advice by young people, especially as I am a relative newcomer to Fishkeeping. but that aside there are many teens on here and elsewhere who are very advanced in the hobby and are able to advise regardless of the level of expertise.

Christi,

I see your points, and they are valid, I just think that the benefits are grossly outweighed by the drawbacks. The drawbacks being what was listed above -- the potential for discrimination, the privacy issues, the arbitariness of the cutoff age, and the simple fact that people can very easily lie about their age.

Well, it was just a suggestion. Seemed like a good idea at the time

We have something to warn us about less experienced hobbyists already. It's called the post count :shifty: Someone whom isn't knowledgeable learns with time and get established and recognised by other posters, or they leave as the forum isn't to their tune  There are however many experienced members also that sign on with lots of experience, but you can usually spot an "experienced" person's posts easily, even when they have "newbie" status. :good:

I don't think the "minor's tag" is really that great an idea. UR or RC (can't remember which) has them and it leads to frequent deflamitory comments towards "tagged" members. This could potentially damage our membership's knowledge base

All the best
Rabbut

there should be a mutual respect regardless of age, and if one of my youngsters was using the site, i wouldnt want there age made an issue of.. for safety reasons/
lots of people have high post counts by replying .. i agree....lovely looking tank.... ......infact lots of those can get you a high post count in no time, but no experience really, i think regular members know who the good advice comes from, and those joining will soon pick it up too

and while im here id like to point out that im UNDER 40  stupid yes, senile no!!

I give up!!! agree to everything everyone has said, as I have read all the posts. All opinions are valid, (some more than others)

I am also surprised that this post has brought far more responses then any of my requests for help with my fish -_-

well, when i was a kid my mother would of killed me to say i was under 14 as (im not saying there are any on here) any old pedo cud be on the luk out and well, get chatting to you ect.

its a valid point that yes some may want to now how old the person is, but clearly there is some sick people around, and maybe one day one of them might join this forum and they might clamp eye on some under 14's as they are classed as frys and then thats all it takes.

for that reason im out! :p
