Just purchased a Yellow Headed Jawfish, and I was wondering if anyone with experience could tell me how the best way to feed them is, especially when they burrow under a big hunk of live rock and you have six other hungry fish at the top. Also, how often do they come out from down under?

Thanks for the help.

Many marine fish are very shy and timid when first introduced. Do you have a good live sand bed with plenty of pods?

sand needs to be a good 6 " for jawfish or it will just die

cheers ritchie :D

 Hey, thanks for the info. My sand bed is 5-6" deep. He actually showed his face today to grab two small pieces of shrimp.

I am not sure what "pods" are. I have heard that term thrown around. What are they, why do I need them, how many should I have, how do I get them, and how do I know whether or not I have them now?

This forum is excellent. Everyone so helpful. Thanks.

"Pods" are the little critters that will start to inhabit your DSB when your tank starts to mature. You will at first think you have a parasite problem, but in reality, these pods are one of the most beneficial sources of food for gobies, jawfish and other bottom guys. Wait till you see the size of the bristle worms you can grow.

The jawfish are adorable, I just love 'em. :)

You can target feed them if they are very shy. A clean plastic turkey baster works very well. Just pull a bit of water from your tank and put it in a clean glass bowl. Add whatever you are going to feed the jawfish into the bowl and let it soak for a minute or two. Suck the water with the food in it from out of the bowl into the baster.

Make sure you don't startle the fish with the baster in the tank. :D Gently and slowly squeeze the bulb on the baster to release the water and food down by the fishes burrow.

Jawfish are serious jumpers. Make sure you have a top/hood that is well over the whole tank.
