Yellow Bellied Turtle Questions?

Been in to purfect pets and the ark today to take a look. No long UV lights and the basking lights are like normal light bulbs sockets with a plug for about £6.99 and a bulb for between £2.50 & £5.00. Accross the road is a diy shop called Savages and they have a normal light bulb holder on a bulldog clip mechanism. That would just clip to the side of uour tank but I dont think they open Sundays. Also there is a dedicated reptile shop in Seaway Road buy Autoquip that might be worth a look! Hope this helps.

Yeh I spotted the one in Seaway road was going to check that out to, hmmm I think I thought that purfect pets was the ark?? where about it purfect pets then? di eitherof them actually have any turtles?

Thanks for your help again Zawiha. Sorry for all the questions.

Neither of the pet shops have turtles in Hyde Road. Only seen them in Hele and Endsleigh Garden Centre.

When your looking at the turtles to get.
Make sure the shop allows the turtles to come out of the tank so you can take a closer inspection.
Look for an animals thats moving around your hand, head outstretched and confident.
More secluded and shy terrapins seem to develope late aggression and can become nasty animals.

An adult yellow belly at work just wants to be left alone by man and turtle, he just snaps at anything that moves.
Missed my fingers when cleaning him a few times.
Whilst my Turtles dont attack me in the slightest :)

Never thought of the Garden centre!

Our LFS in hele are pretty good, they are really hlpful and in the case of fish, have rarely ever been wrong, unhelpful or sold dodgy fish so im sure their turtles will be fine, they seem to know there stuff in there, but I wil bear in mind the handling bit and wont buy if im at all dubious

I noticed when i read up it said about soft shells.
Just to quell any hopes, Soft shell turtles usually want to be left on their own
and can get to a size which is usually plus 12". Not a turtle for handling as a fellow employee has one.
and they do like to protect themselves with alot of biting (guessing as they lack the hardshell, thats their main form of defence)

If your both stuck on finding turtles,
the RSPCA usually rescue alot of turtles "from adults to hatchlings" take a look down your local centre.

I didnt really lik the look of the soft shells anyway, much prefer the yellow bellies.

Brooksy, the Endsleigh garden centre, is that the one in Ivybridge?

Yeah, thats right of the dual carriageway near Ivybridge. They had two turtles but they are a lot bigger than the baby sliders in Hele. I found Hele to be very helpful so they are probably your best bet. Got my turtle yesterday and I have him in a temporary baby tank. They are great to watch!

awesome, what kinda set up are you using? any pics?
Im using a 37litre tank with a small uv light screwed on to the side of the tank with th basking light hanging down from the uv light. It will do until my new larger tank arrives. Will try to post a pic later but not sure how!

great stuff, where did you get the lamp from in the end? the DIY store in hyde road you mentioned? im going up to aquator in a minute to have anothe look lol I cant stay away, pay day is not until the 27th though!

Congratz on your new turtle Brooksy,
you'll have to get some pictures of the blighter :)

How long will he/she be in that tank? as 37 litres
isnt alot at all.

I bought it the basking light in purrfect pets and then after found the light with the clip in Savages for a third of the price!
Only in the small tank for a month. Its only about an inch long at the moment so it loses itself in the tank!

Does the turtle still have its hatching tooth?
As an inch baby is Tiny! even the ones i come across are about 2 1/2.
Keep a close eye on it!

Thats great news :D
i was worried for you for a second!
Yeah that babies gona be growing fast
make sure not to feed it too much protein as it can cause
doming of the shell. plenty of greens too :)
For meat, stay clear of pork. It has a high fat content.

I feed mine once every two/three days. make sure as well not to over feed, these animals are
greedy.

Vitamin D3 from UV lights is also very important as it aids in boneand shell development.
though a calcium suppliment is also great to provide.
