quick question though...they hve laid the eggs on the 3D background in the aquarium...so they were pretty hard to spot! theres hundreds there...all dark. but here and there is a white egg..im guessing the white ones are unfertilised? should i attempt to remove these few or will mum/dad take care of that for me?i dont want them going mouldy and killing the rest of the eggs.
also how long do they usually take to hatch and should i feed anything 'special'
theres also 2 young vieja, around 8 cm long in the tank, should i remove these incase they try to eat the babies or should the parents protect them??

oooh im so excited, ive only had the fish a few weeks :))))

Hello there, been a while, congrats :good: ... yes whites a unfertilized and mouldy, if you can remove then good, but i pesonally would leave them to it, first time around might not be good, but sometimes works well...

Best situation in a tank would be the only pair, no other fish what so ever, is this in your big tank?

Eggs should hatch in about 2-3days, four days after until free swimming, newly hatched brineshrimp is best for also if you can find them deshelled brimpshrimp eggs, i got mine on Ebay, also another is microworm cultures, easy to cultivate :good:

wow so they should be hatching any day now..spotted them 2 days ago, they could have been there the day before. not gonna have time to get brine shrimp or make a culture.....do i have any other options? if i remember correctly i could give hard boiled egg yolk in a napkin or something...crushed flakes? its just for the first few days until i can get some brineshrimpy eggs :) i have a bottle of them here that shelagh sent me last year....could get them hatched out in a few days...? and yup this is the biiig tank..theres the couple and 2 smaller viejas in there, but the smaller ones tend to hide all the time....i'll try getting them out and in with the oscars :)

oh my, just turned te light on in the tank to show hubby and theres wriggly tails sticking out!!!!!!! :hyper:

Heheh yaaaaaaaay......Um once you see tails you have about four days before you need to start feeding them, unsure how long brineshrimp take to hatch,i was lucky enough to find the de-shelled brineshrimp eggs, dried there pefeck... :good:

not sure if its normal or not but the mum has wafted all the babies off the 3D wall and onto the floor of the tank? her and dad are kind of hovering over them all....
gonna get a hatchery set up tonight and flip some of these bs eggs in and see what happens :)

Yes thats normal, once there tails appear and they start wriggling, cichlids will often move there batch, esp if feeling threated, thats why its best to have no tank mates,,,,dont be suprised if you wake up and find them gone, look around alot for them, but i would advise to trying keeping peeking to a distance, you dont want to disturb them to much, esp a first batch, they could just turn around and eat the fry, my angels used to do that, good luck with them... :good:

omg..............;theres so many of them, got a good glance at them today, they are all in a big pile in the corner of one tank..............;wow wow wow! wish i could take good photos but the camera wont focus on them!

Hehe nice one,,,,good luck with it all, did you start some brine cultures?

i cheated and drove up to the fish shop in the next town, they had bags of live mozzie larvaes, brine shrimp eggs (deshelled?) and sea monkeys (arent they just really young brine shrimp?)
so bought a few bags to try. so far theyve not eaten a thing, but mum and dad loved the treats!

yes...got some half decent pics at last! some of the little ones have left the nest and ventured forward, the rest of the nest sits behind the 'castle' wall (if you look in the bottom corner you can just see the round bellies in the dark corner...)
