Yay! Cherry Shrimp!

Just got in the cherry shrimp I bought off ebay today.
All arrived healthy and lively! WOO! Bought 10 of them, but the seller sent more just in case of DOA. So now I have extra! YAY! lol
Some of them are SO tiny though, like ants. Frackin adorable

I just hope they live.
We had ghost shrimp in the tank before and they all died for some reason. Haven't put anything in to the tank that could've caused that.. *shrugs* Fairly certain I haven't ever used a copper based med in the tank before since we've never had problems with parasites in it.
Cleaned out the tank after it though so hopefully it's ok... sigh.

Anywho.. they're acclimating right now

How do you tell them apart?
It looks like some of them are already coloring up.

Can only find a few of them. Some of them were SO tiny.

Look at how the trumpet snail in the back dwarfs them lol

Arn't they great When I added mine they all literately disappeared for about 5 days and even then it was about 8 weeks before I positively counted all my shrimp in one sitting! When they want to hide they are soo ###### good at it!

Not sure if I have babies some of my females have missing eggs at about 3 1/2 weeks so I suspect it will be a while before I find babies if the adults were so difficult!

Nervous times hehe.

Sounds like they're very easy to breed, it's just keeping them alive long enough... at least in my case. I just have never had any luck with shrimp.

Just bought some Hikari Crab Cuisine off ebay for them. Never seen it sold at petstores and saw on another site that it's a good shrimp food, so, we'll see!

You can tell the sexes as the males are quite clear with spotted striped pattern, the females are deep red normally with a visible saddle just behind the head. They will start to colour within 48 hours so may take upto a week to fully get over the stress of moving.

48 hours? My baby cherry shrimp which are a little bigger than the ones shown above are still greyish like the ones that are in the bag. The water and their enviroment are perfectly well. Their mothers have been breeding around the clock and are EXTREMELY red and colorful. whats wrong?

Just wanted to update.. the ones I have spotted have colored up really well. Will try to get some more photos later

The juvies range in the amount of time it takes them to colour up properly as long as they are breeding they should be fine. If you get white colouration then it is a sign of serious stress normally resulting in death of the shrimp.

my "juvies" are breeding, but they still have the white coloration.... This is kind of a mix of what ur tellin me lol. Breeding = good. White color = bad. Breeding + White color = ?

White colouration is a sign of infection or parasites normally. They breed like rabbits when the water quality is sufficient for them to survive and the temperature is above 16C. I am not sure what the colouration could be just saying the general rules perhaps you have RCS which have hybridised at some point and have a slight colour morph but thats just a guess.

I brought 3 super cherry shrimps as they were named about a month ago now, and now found 4 babies of various sizes, all three adults are very bright red so i'm wondering which one the male is.. one of the babies is a lot clearer than the adults and they are all of various sizes. I have noticed a lot of particles in the water some of which could well be tiny babies and i feel guilty cleaning the tank out now!

anyway they all seem quite happy, only had the tank since december so i must be doing something right, they are sharing it with pentazona barbs, zebra danio's and 6 cories all seem quite happy but wondering how many shrimps i have room for now if they keep on breeding at this rate!

Aww,
I love cherry shrimp, but 5 of them were eat by my two axolotls. They are a heathly snack for them anyways lol. There was only one survivor and he is in with my frogs now
