i was cehcking on my mw culture tonight, and i tnoiced something very strange. First off lets start with what my cluture uses as "ingredient", in a little container i have mixed:

oatmeal
yeast
bread
water
sugar
1 dorp of small animal vitamins

mixed until it's very gooey. so i add in the worms, and a few days later, all the solids have gathered at teh bottom and i end up with the liquidy layer on top, and within a week the mw would be blooming.

and it was, until thsi morning when i saw this white/flaky/film stuff covering my entire culture! thinking that my wroms have suffocated, i scooped out the thin film and threw it out. (no clue waht it is, never seen it before). after a few hours, the culture was blooming again, with a LOT of wroms. so i harvested waht i needed for hte babies. and left it.

and now tonight, i find that same film stuff on it top of the culture again, and once again, no worms. So i removed that film stuff again, and a few hours later, voila! worms have flying out like crazy. So i harvested again, and i took a look at the culture this time and i noticed the mw seems to have grown a lot bigger

usually they are very very thin, almost like a pencil line thing, well now they look twice as fat  i have no idea what's going on. I assume they are safe to feed, i just seem to have extra large mw now? :fun:

live food drives me insane

i didnt notice the small animal vitamins.. thats interesting.. maybe next time you culture them, dont use the small animal vitamins, and see if they get as big..

you could be on to something

actually wuv gave me the idea for hte small vitamins. first time i tried it i overdosed and ended up killing hte culture.

so i restarted it and i have 2 clutures going. One with vitamins, one is the exact same minus the vitamins.

I just chekced on teh culture, it's been 12 hours since i last checked it and there is that funky film on top again. some worms were there but i think most are trapped under that film. It has been removed and i expect worms to start moving up again.

Anyone have any ideas waht this filmy thing is? it smells like yeast, almost like wine. I think it's hte yeast's fermentation? but i have no idea how yeast works besides the fact that it produces CO2, does yeast mkae any other byproduct?

The one without the vitamins doens't look any larger to me :dunno:

well.. maybe the vitamins are the kicker for bigger mws... the film tho.. ive never had that with my mw cultures... might be from something you put in there :X
