so i went to lfs today aiming to get 3 BN pleco for my 300 litre tank
actually came away with 2 clown pleco thinking they would do the same thing with cleaning up algae
realising that they dont and need bogwood i need some help
i will keep them seeing as they are about 1 inch
going to buy a bit of bogwood on tuesday
can i also get two 2" BN pleco and rehome the clowns later when they get a bit bigger???
also how often do i feed cucumber and how much??? same with algae wafers???

Is ths the Pleco you brought? If so, then you are right in thinking it needs bogwood.

Clow Pleco

They don't grow very big and providing you create plenty of hiding places, you can still home a BN or two in your tank.
Don't rely on the BN for cleaning your tank as they are not always as efficient as people think they are!
Also, be careful if you buy two or more BN as you may end up with a male and female, which in turn may mean lots of fry! Not so bad if you can rehome them but a nightmare if you can't!

thanks guys
yea im getting a piece of bogwood to be on the safe side
also get 2 female BNs and then get a male if i want to breed
thnaks

They do tend to hide a lot during the day as they are nocturnal. A lot of people use moonlights so they have a better chance of seeing them later in the day. I never see all of mine at any one time but it's great watching them when they do come out.

I wonder if this would be much of a problem anywhere, as long as there are independent lfs in the area. Their small size makes them ideal for many tanks where a common pleco just won't do. I never seem to see them on sale at the lfs near me.

Clown Plecs only grow to 3" so are smaller than BN anyway. They don't need bogwood at all.

a wood eating species not needing wood lol thats a new 1 on me :p

anyways lol

as ppl have said if u have a 300L tank u should get away with having 2 BN's and still been able 2 keep the clowns just make sure there is sufficient WOOD in the tank lol and make sure they have plenty of hiding spaces as rock said they will constantly hide during the day and will venture out at night :) BN's are 1 of the few plecs that dont really care when or when they venture round the tank they also are extreamly good algae eaters ive yet 2 come across 1 that actually isnt :)

You can have mine then Jen, they are real lazy beggars!

Inchworm - Very few lfs will turn baby BN away as they are such popular fish. Our store became inundated at one point with people bringing them in, that we had to turn them away before we became overrun!

LOL they are probably fed 2 well m8 that they think wots the point in moving and doing any hard work :p

You might be on to something there....
I swear my other half feeds them when we are meant to be giving them a fasting day. And they say us women are bad....

i used to have a single clown plec, never saw it at all during the day baring in mind i had it in a tank with no wood for 2 n a half years and now lives in the gf's community tank, they must be quite versatile! I personally arent keen on them, dnt think there nice looking! Nor do i like bn's.
Each to their own.
The best plec iv had is my current 1. L122, stunning fish, stays relatively small, out all day long, never off the wood and the glass!
Dnt see them much tho.

ok so how often do you feed your pleco and how much
i mean how much cucumber and agae wafers???
