i plan to dress it up a bit too when ive stopped spending money on the tanks..

gonna put a skirting or something across the edge below the tank. took the poster that was stuck on there from its bookcase days off there too lol.

never a tv stand any sideways stress= game over.
here's mine it's basically two kiddies wooden toy storage shelves adapted glued and screwed

Hey these last two examples are really good! I could do something like that and maybe add cabinet doors and stain it. Thanks for the ideas. :D

mine was two kits (pine with rubbing wax to colour) one of the most important things is the back is thick and well attached or it will buckle. also the sides should be in compression (top sits on them) and a sturdy base to spread the load not 4 legs directly on floorboards. sturdy top-mine is kitchen worktop(aquired at zero cost.)

looked at expensive pine built furniture and most of it was crap, local aquarium shops couldn't assure me that their stands would be strong enough as the tank is 260ltr approx deep and short and they thought more weight over less area=failure.
my design will work out the same as a shop one price wise but 10x stronger

doors to folllow when i get round to it-spending money aquarium decor and other bits

^^^ Yeah, don't worry I won't. That's why I started this thread in a way. I saw a few particle board and other stands that I thought were flimsy. Walmart sells a particle board 55 gallon stand. :grr:

This might sound obvious, but make sure none of the tank hangs off either side of the stand whatever solution you come up with. 48" is very wide, that would house a 55" widescreen TV, or 60" 4:3! Also, make sure that there is no potential for the top of the stand to bow with time- you'll end up with a cracked base.

I personally am a firm believer on using a proper stand for your aquarium. A tv stand definately isnt. They are made for TVs, not tanks. I have done this before tho. Got a stand for a 10G....6 months it started to sag from the combination of weight and water exposure.

Theres probably a neich (Neesh? Neish? Who cares?) market for tank stands....

Niche :)

most metals are but i would stay away from tin and alluminum stands. metals like that would crumple easy under the weight. also pretty much any stand that isn't made of pine or any other soft wood is good. ideally i might say red/rosewood. its very strong and looks really pretty too. but it could get pricey :/ . the best bet would be (once you found one) is to buy some additional lumber (i.e oak, maple etc) and reinforce it.

umm... aluminium is many times stronger then wood (for the same wieght). A proper Aluminium Stand would be able to hold ALOT of weight. Many times what wood could with the same weight of materials.
But it would cost alot too.

Any hard wood would be fine. I would try and find fir though, its one of the tougher hard woods and is also about the cheapest too.

Wood is stronger then alot of you are giving it credit. while particle board shouldnt be used for a load bearing peice its fine to use as a cross brasing peice. you could also use a good plywood for load bearing peices. Most commercial stands have 2 real load bearing legs, generally the one to each end of the tank, anything else is decrative or just cross bracing.

A tv stand would work, depending on what stand (the sony wega 42" tube tv's weigh in at 500 lbs), because of where the weight is with a tank over a tv I might be inclined to add legs to the outside corners if its one of the "pillar" type stands.

well, just make sure its not made of particle board, or you going to be in for a surprise in a few days/weeks.

yea maybe even a few min/hours. i have personally have really bad experienceswith particle board and wouldn't even trust the weight of a toaster on it lol

hmm i just finished putting this stand together(havent put my tank on it yet), it seems solid enough:

do you guys have any idea what wood it's made out of? will it hold a full load 50 gallon 36x15x20 tank? I like the style, it looks really nice, but the question is, will it stand the test of time with a 450+ lbs tank on it..
