My tanks fishless cycling,

When i stock i shall be putting in

6 Harlequin rasboras
6 Sterbai Corys

Do you think itd be ok to ad some amano shrimps in as well?

Bare in mind with the fish ill eventually be stocked to 1.5" per gallon... But then again you dont count shrimp in your stocking do you.

Yeah they will be fine. Shrimp hardly produce any bioload on the filter, but good planting and a cave system should be provided aswell. I recommend you keep the tank at 22-23C shrimp live longer when kept at cooler temperatures as their metabolism slows, of course if you want them to act like they are swimming in red bull crank the temp higher but I think that temp would be the best balance for tankmates and activity.

Thanks for the reply,

I would also like some cherry shrimp. How many of each would you recommend for my tank?

The best things about shrimp.
They dont affect the stocking.
I think.
But sorry to hijack, but do other shrimp get on with eachother?

If you still want the amanos then I would say a colony of 6 amanos and 30-40 cherry shrimp. If you contact Pippoodle she might be able to rustle you up a mix of cherries and tiger shrimp still general colony size applies :shifty:

Young fisher:
Depends on the mix virtually all macros come from 3 basic species so are all compatible. normal sized claw shrimp depends on whether you get a palaemenete or machrobrachium species the former being compatible the latter being nasty buggers. Long armed shrimp are normally machrobrachium so nasty again. Filter shrimp are safe with anything and everything (except something which will attack them) but need a large aquarium 40+ gallons and directed feeding.

I was thinking like 10 amanos and 5 cherry shrimp.

As cherry shrimp will soon multiply if i keep them happpy, but dont amanos need saltwater to breed or something?

Yeah amano shrimp need brackish water for their juveniles to survive which is very hard to recreate in the home aquarium as it involves very slight changes from fresh to salt water. Amano's are up to you I think a colony of 6 will be active enough to regularly see in your set up but your tank and adding more won't cripple it. Cherries do breed rapidly but baby shrimp are also a favourite of fish ;), corys like to patrol the bottom and the baby shrimp like to graze on the algae on the bottom. Rasboras are very active swimmers which will patrol the top and mid and the corys will be bottom to mid....

Most people on the forums who will ship shrimp to you for very cheap won't send you such small quantities as its not worth their time and LFS generally charge relatively high prices for such shrimp.

Ok i was going for more amanos since i had 5 cherry shrimp before and never saw more than one or two at a time but i guess that comes with keeping shrimp.

6 amanos and 20 cherry shrimp?

Ill probably see a couple of each at a time anyway :p

Should be fine I think jm clark and pippoodle ship small amounts like that drewry normally only ships 50+.

Ill start a thread a bit nearer the time when i plan to buy some and see whos willing to ship.

Thanks for the advice.
