hi iv just brought an external filter and it has four trays but there empty im using it on a marine tank would this work. live sand in bottom tray its live as its been in my tank for a year and a big reef tank for years on end. the one above with pieces of lr . the one above that active carbon , and then sponge in top to prevent sand going in pump

scrap th carbon can any one suggest anything thats more lasting eg forever ish

idk how well the water would move through the sand, but maybe somebody on here has done it. As for the LR, go for rubble as it has more surface area therefore better biological function. Idk of any chemical filtration that lasts forever.

where can i get lr rubble from though

Go with live rock rubble, live sand, filter sponge through to filter padding to polish the water and that should be fine. Swap it out each month alternatively each section.
