hey all, just looking for more advice here...
I have a 45g community tank, well planted...

But im starting to build a big tank, 8ft

i will be using this as a piranha tank, between 8 and 10 red bellies...

do they need "pretty stuff" in the tank to keep them happy? because i would really just like to have it dead plain, Like just sand with a black or blue background and nothing else... maybe a couple of $100 notes on the tank floor :shout: :hyper: :shout: :hyper: see who sticks there finger in then lol

what type of filtration should i use as well?

cant wait till its done! should look crazy!

OH OH!! one more thing!!! how much about will it weigh??? only have floorboards, would they support it of not??

Slush

To work out the weight of a tank you need to convert to metric.

Then multiply length x width x height.

Multiply this answer by 1000 and this will give you water volume in litres.

1 Litre = 1 KG.

what fish does need pretty stuff to make them happy?
a tank with sand and water will do them fine and maybe some real wood and tall plants/floating plants.
filtration should be strong they are messy meat eaters.
personally i think it will be a massive waste of water they are boring fish

Well i dunno, im still a newbie, but i have always wanted piranhas since forever!! i dont care if they dont move at all

Just kinda really hard to find in australia... do i need one of those under tank filter thingys??

they dont move at all, only to eat,2 minutes out of each day they are active and interesting.mind you i have only kept red bellies so i cant really comment on any other species of piranha.if i had the choice again i would go for a less often seen piranha like violet line or elongatus.
a sump would be a better choice for filtration :good:

i dont find that true at all....the only reason piranha dont move around more when your in the room is because they arent generally comfortable with people...all you gotta do in order to cure that problem is keep them in a high traffic area of your house and they will gradually become more people friendly and move around alot more....i have a pair of 7 year old red bellies and theyre friendly as can be....when i clean their tank they actually nuzzle against my hand...haha

i have nothing to add to this because i've never kept piranha nor had the urge to. But i saw this on You Tube and thought id show you. ( if anyone thinks they will be upset or affected buy this clip you should not view it past the 10 or 20 second mark if at all.)

But this shows the importance of proper filtrtration and how messy they are. You also mentioned you want a minimized tank as far as decor. That is a good idea, as they tend to tear everything else up as they feed.

People feed piranahs live food.. i really dont agree with that as they can just as easily go to the pet store and buy some beefheart.

its sad that the goldfish had to die but i saw all these comments calling the owner cruel but its just natural and they need fish its not like putting 2 male bettas together. but personally i would make the 45 gallon either a largly planted tropical tanks or a small cichlid tank.
