Hi everyone,

I was recently sold a 25l tank. I've done some research and I think a betta fish will be okay in a tank of that size. Can anyone confirm if this is right?

I've also read that you can only keep one male betta or a few female bettas in one tank. Is the tank size big enough for more than one female? Or should I stick with one female/one male?

Last question. Can anyone recommend fish that would go well with one betta in a 25l tank? (I totally understand if the tank is too small for multiple fish, I've just read a lot of conflicting information).

Sorry for all the questions I just want to get this right.

Thank you for any and all help!

No more than one betta in a tank that size. Neon tetras could go in that tank but I advise not because they are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 10 or more. Some shrimp might go well with one betta if you want more life. Just make sure there are plenty of hiding spots for them if that’s the route you wanna take.

I'm no fish expert but I love Bettas and can tell you that you should only keep 1 beta in there also if you do upgrade to a bigger tank dont go for any really fancy big fins/flowing long fins as beta can be really nippy but sometimes you can get away with it if you know the beta is not aggressive and you know its temperament

You could do a single betta. Betta, even females, do not really get along well with eachother, especially not in a tank that size. You could have some shrimp and snails in there too, but (depending on the betta) the shrimp may become an expensive snack. If you had snails, I would recommend Nerite Snails as they cannot reproduce in freshwater, so they wouldn't overrun your tank

Thank you for your advice everyone. I'll definitely get just the one fish. I've read a few things that say female betta fish get lonely on their own? Would you recommend getting a male fish, or is that just nonsense?

Not at all I love betta and both male and female are gorgeous fish but I much prefer the males

You should be fine to get either. I have a female betta, and she does not seem lonely. Bettas are not exactly social fish. The only reasons I can THINK of that a betta would seem "lonely' would be that they didn't have things in their environment to engage and interest them, and they would be bored, and therefore look sad, and people would assume they were lonely, but I may be wrong.

I 100% agree about finding the nice side of the internet. So relieved none of the replies were judgy! I'm definitely looking forward to getting started now :)
We are always happy to answer any questions!
