I went into a shop today. (An electrical and general crap shop that sells fish)

They had for sale:

Redtail sharks 1 for £2.50 or 2 for £4

And

Male Fighters 1 for £3 or 2 for £4

Redtail sharks are about £5.50 in my LFS..
& aint you ment to keep 1 per a tank? giving a 2 for £4 deal is going to make a tank nasty..?

Unless of cause the person who buys them know what they're doing :good:

I'm pretty sure you can keep red tails/ruby sharks together! One of my pals has got 2 ruby sharks and 1 albino ruby. They get on fine together as far as I've seen.

However, the male fighter bit is dumb. What a bunch of wallys!

I think they're ok while they're young but as they get older and bigger you'd need a huge tank to house more than one without aggression issues (or so I've heard - never kept them myself).

Talking about bad advice and ignorant statements, my local petshop owner once told me (when I was looking for live bloodworms).... He has frozen bloodworms, but they do become alive again as soon as you put them in water..... Huh!!!!..... Miracle worms!!!! (Og!!!.... I have plenty to add to this list of "Bad advice")

It's a lovely idea isn't it - dead frozen worms that come back to life when you defrost them. Shame he has no idea how nature works. I wonder if he also thinks that the bodies in a morgue come back to life when they thaw out...

One recent piece of bad advice which I received at my DFS (distant fish store) was that one particular brand of T5 aquarium lighting would provide "more vitamins" to my aquatic plants compared to the brand of T5's which I was using which had the same technical specs/dimensions etc.

He gave this advice in response to me mentioning that I'd had some trouble with growing my tropical plants and that cyanobacteria had taken hold. He never once asked if I was dosing nutrients or c02; he felt it was purely down to the lighting!

whilst not "the final solution". (to your problem) this is not "bad advice". the spectrum of light given off by a bulb/tube, does indeed affect the production of vitamins in live creatures. even Aquarium critters. and yes, the brand may well make a difference.

I was in the LFS yesterday and some lady was being told that she should take the light bulb out of her hood and replace it with a UV bulb for the terrapin's shells?

Dont know if this is correct tho because there would only be a UV bulb o_O

yes they're right, terrpins and most reptiles need a special reptile UV and heat lamp in their tanks for basking. You can get combined UV&heat lamps. Normal lightbulbs aren't enough

yes it is right.

I'm no expert on reptiles but, UVa and b, as well as visible light, are important for their well-being

The brand he was wanting to sell me had the same light spectrum and other specifications so any difference wouldn't even be measurable.

Well you can "freeze" some flies but they are more in a hibernation/unconscious mode which then come back when warmed up, though too long in the freezer they will just die. As far as I remember anyway.

I was once told by a worker at P@H that if you change too much water it will cause a build up of ammonia and nitrite because you will have removed all the bacteria.

I see your point, but its not always true. one of the lights, even though they claim the same spectrum, may well turn out to be better. that's why we ask advice of those who, should, know.
