OK all,
I set up a little ten gallon tank to breed guppies in and I saw my first fry today. It won't be long before Tiger (my Oscar) is going to have his own Thanksgiving !!!!

I say poor fry.
J/k :p
Raising fry for food is a good idea. I might take it up myself.
Yea, it's an excellent idea to raise them yourself so you don't have to worry about diseases yet you still get to see the stalking and killing. :smb:

lmao Sondan!!

I had a well established guppy tank and THEN got my beautiful baby tiger oscar, Una. I've been spoiling her rotten with juvenile guppies and she loves me for it.

Damn,
I was getting worried!! There were over 20 views to this post but not one reply....I was starting to get worried that no one found this humerous besides myself. I was almost afraid to look in here,,,,I thought it might be a Fishman's Lynch Mob !!!
IRT: AquaNut - Grandma had a 30 gallon duppy tank as a kid that she would use to feed P.U. (Pretty Ugly Oscar). Those poor fish were so inbred that some of them started coming out with humped backs and stuff. I don't know why Grandma never bought a few new females for the population??? But MAN did P.U. LOVE those guppies....You would have thought he was at Antonio's Italian Restaurant eating Spaghetti.

LMAO!!!

Yea, you don't want to say it in the other forums but as long as I mod this one, this kind of talk stays and is perfectly fine in New World cichlids. IMO, it's a legitimate aspect of keeping tankbusters. Just keep it in this forum and away from the other ones or others can actually complain about it tho. :)

My neighboor has a breeder tank for guppies.I feed some to my angels once or twice a week, they love it

Dont feel bad it's the food chain!!! You must love your oscar  ;)

Lucky you! I'm hoping to get the same thing going with a possible pair of firemouths I have. My bigger cichlids, and one is an Oscar, love live food. If I could get my own supply going I would be so happy!
And ya know, at first I was worried that it would freak my little girls out to watch our big oscar eating goldfish or rosie reds, but they actually beg me to let them feed them to the oscar! They think its cool! (I think I'm a very lucky mom!) The only time it was ever a problem was when the Oscar ate Cojones, my little male pink convict. But there was nothing I could do about it, its just in his nature.

Anyway......... Congrats on the free food source! I think its great!

LOL Missy.. that cracked me up. Jenica also likes to help the feeding process and doesn't mind that I take fish from 'her' guppy tank, as long as I don't take any of the many ones she has named Pretty Tail. I explained how we're helping preserve the lives of the already established guppies in the little tank and also that it's part of Una's natural behaviour to hunt live prey. She thinks it's totally cool.

Look at all these people in here ok with feeding live foods. I feel like I'm in Heaven.

Lol Jeff... I'm breaking Jenica in. ;)
Glad you are because I don't feel like being outsmarted by a 4 year old trying to convince her it's a good thing.

:kira: :kira: :kira:

She'll only outsmart you on bedtime and what time of the day she's allowed to start eating cookies.

You know I find this "group" really refreshing. It is nice to know that people teaching their kids that life and death are actually part of life. I find it so hard to comprehend people who say that working cattle would be gross but then they don't mind going to McDonalds. I bet if the PhDs of the world did a study they would find that people who actually do real life interactions as kids (i.e. raising feeder fish) actually have a BETTER understand and appreciation for life...not less. {Now where did I put that dip net ????}
