Rabid Betta Activist
I'm am so psyched. I don't know how many of your recall, but my mom had caved and allowed me to buy a little betta who was having a self mutilating problem. He was in Petsmart, which uses cups even smaller than Wallmart or Petco, and was sitting in a pile of his own shredded off fins. He kept whirling around and attacking whatever fins he could reach; his tail was a little nub, he'd gotten as much of his doral that could hang down as possible, and even his ventrals were a bit chewed up. I know this is often genetic, so I worried about taking him, but decided to give him a shot under the theory that stress could be causing it as he was surrounded by tons of other bettas in the store.
Well, I dare say my theory proved correct! After several days of keeping him isolated with the lights off, with LOTS of plants and a cave, I'm happy to report that he's stopped attacking himself, and with a little bit of salt and betta fix, is growing his fins back rapidly. Such a happy boy!
I couldn't be more thrilled that he's stopped harming himself. I know I can't get my hopes up too high, but I really do suspect stress is the issue. I only saw him do it once while he was here, and it was after I moved the tank into a different room.
Hooray for Jeff Klee ^^
