A woodworking friend offered to make me one to match the cabinet my tank is on. I don't know if wood would be a good enough heat insulator though as I've only ever had a plastic canopy. Anyone have any clue??

If you got a heater in your tank(I'm sure you do) a wood, plastic, wire, etc. canopy is not really going to matter the heater will keep the water at the appropriate temp. A lot of better quality tank set-ups are sold with wooden canopies. Is this the answer your looking for.

Yes it was :p
Thank you very much (I wasn't sure if the canopy material prevented heat loss or not)

I have a wooden canopy/hood on mine. with a lid that lifts in the front. But I also have glass lids underneath that resting on the top rims of the tank, so they probably moreso than the hood help keep things toasty. :)
