I moved to a new to me city last winter, and the one big thing I've been missing is the old fashioned, face to face, talk to people aquarium clubs. There is a lively social media group here, and clearly, a dynamic hobby. But none of these people actually meet unless they cross paths in a store.
I got talking with an aquarium store owner, and we've called an actual physical meeting for tomorrow evening. How many people will show up? I hope for a dozen.
In that group of people I've never met, I expect there will be aquarists who know a lot about things. That could evolve into a list of presenters on various subjects. Maybe I'll finally look at shrimp. We can set up an auction for extras on the fish we breed, and a rehoming system for mistakes. Hey, we may even like each other.
Where I was before, someone called a meeting like this in 1933, and the club is still going. We live in a time when the quality of life for younger workers is getting harder to maintain- longer hours, more problems arranging childcare, lack of leisure time and such. People have also developed a dislike for social activities, and keep to themselves or stay online more. So it could fall flat.
I like fish that swim against the current.
