so lately I've been looking at a couple tetras...

Iguanodectes geisleri

and

Iguanodectes spilurus

the spilurus, are available now, but I was wondering if I could bolster my school later with the geisleri, when they become available, or is cross breeding likely???

Breeding tetras takes a lot more prep than many realize. The chances of them breeding without a thought out set up are super unlikely. Iguanadactes are not an easy tetra. I love them - I ordered some a couple of weeks ago but they were sold out.

A lot of my common tetras have fry that die if there is light in the tank, if the eggs even survive any light exposure. Before I came on here this afternoon, I was out in the fishroom painting a couple of tanks black on three sides so I could use them for tetra breeding.

I know from keeping geisleri in the past that they are obligate shoalers. Don't consider a mixed group of 2 species. You'd be looking at six or more of each species. Ten would be better. They were 6 for $55 CAD here, but you don't see them often. They're small mouthed, easily intimidated, delicate, graceful and beautiful fish. I found them kind of nervous, hence the need for a shoal.

I guess that is the question asked; but i think the better question is CAN they interbreed; while i don't know the factual answer my guess is yes given they are both in a small genus.

The only place i could find selling them is $8-$12 range when they have them in stock (that's per fish). Definitely more than $55 for 6 ;)

Also the description i found said that they get up to 4 inches long so they need a bit of peaceful space. My
Hemiodus gracilis and Anostomus ternetzi (both in groups of 20) occupy that space; the H. gracilis do pretty much school esp at night the a. ternetzi less so but both are nice fishes though to be honest it is the a. ternetzi that gets the most attention by visitors.

They're lovely fish, but I don't have a lot of info on them. I find tetras rarely cross, but often the barriers are geographic and those fish may never meet in nature.

Here, you can go a long time without seeing them, as their length makes them poor sellers. They have the ways of a smaller fish, but they do need swimming space. 6 for 55 Canadian was a good price. Too bad, but the guy knows I'm interested if he gets them again.
