i have two chinese fire bellied newts in a 33 gallon, heavily planted tank that also houses a variety of tetras, siamese foxes and catfish. i have three very small loaches in there too. i got three Amano shrimp yesterday, i found the shell of one shrimp today, i am not sure if it was killed by one of the newts (wouldn't they have eaten the whole thing?), or if it died from transport stress and was scavenged clean, I dont think it was a moulting. I saw the other two hanging out together and doing fine a few inches from the newts. I know that loaches can eat shrimp but mine are so small right now i dont think they could've handled them.
The shrimp are of course hard to locate, with all the plants and moss and wood to hide in, so i don't know if they have been eaten or not because i cant see them. i would like to get more, but not if they are to be newt food.
They are about 2cm long, would it be better to get slightly bigger ones or to raise them in my 5 gallon tank until they are big enough for the community?
i have read cases of people keeping newts and amanos together sucessfully..i'd just like some more info.
Thanks!
