Will live plants help lower nitrite/nitrates?

I want to add Live plants soon, and my nirtItes and nitrAtes are still a little high.

Will the addition of plants help to bring these levels down?

Yes, the plants will help reduce nitrate, although I'm not too sure about nitrites.

If tank is cycled wont need to worry about the nitrites.

Then plants will help nitrates. If your tank is cycled then you wont have to worry about ammonia and nitrites.

Only thing present is nitrates

The tank has been running for about 3 weeks, with fish for 2. There was established filter media and some gravel. So I'm imagining that I still have a bit of cycling going on. I did a 30% water change and sand syphoning today, and pretty much once a week.
