Ok so during the cycle of a new tank it is very common to get Diatoms in your tank. However is this common to get a week after it finally goes away? everything looks great as far as levels and the fish are happy but this brown ugly stuff is taking over. Please reply, any help would be great.thanks.

i went through it twice and so did the store when we set things up over there.
yes its a Paine in the booty but it will go away and then you get to look forward to
your first HA or caneo outbreak  :X :/ :-( i just wish you the best of luck :good:

its normal.. and may get worse... ish hairalgae! red slime! :p
but using Rowaphos is a major plus on ur side :)
are you using an RO system?
Ter

How is the current in your tank? Low currents can cause hair algae from what I read.

I'm not using RO.I m going to get another powerhead becouse I only have one.Im pretty sure I could use some more current. The far corner from the powerhead seems to have more alge.Hopefully this will get rid of the brown uglyness!
Die!atoms!

Would a UV sterilizer help with this?

Worked a treat for me on a FW tank but heard mixed things about using one on SW - i.e. can kill the stuff you want as well as the stuff you don't?

What say y'all?

You should really try to use RO/DI water :good:

my tank is in the process of cycling and im using a uv sterliser its supost to be a plus beacuase it removes parasites like whitespot but i do not know if it will remove algae

Thanks a lot.I will definitely look further into the RO systems and look at the UV sterilizers. Thanks for the help you guys rock!

Using Tapwater (depending on your area) is not a good start to any marine tank

You will simply be increasing the phos levels ever time you do a water change

Agreed, tapwater is a HUGE no-no. Also, what kind of lights are you running on the tank?

I also use tapwater and there is no way that I could ever get RO water. Will my tank explode or something?
