i have a fluval 405 which is infested with pest aquatic snails. I have removed the filter from the tank. (it has a different filter running it) if i put a mild solution of bleach and water in the canister and leave it for a while will it kill the snails? Or do you have any other methods to get rid of them! :shout: Thanks

Oh, and i will obviously rinse it thorughly afterwards to get all the bleach out before re installing

can u not just put in in very hot water?
or stick it in the freezer overnight?
salt water might kill them?

maybee, doubt i will get it in the freezer lol and i was thinking of using boiling water with the bleach soloution??

i wouldnt bee too keen on a bleach solution just incase it wasnt rinsed thoroughly afterwards

just let it dry out in the garden and the snails will die off!

Bleach will kill most living things in high enough concentrations... hnece why it is a good method so sanitizing... kills the living "baddies" that we dont want around

Ox :good:

if you are bleaching the media then you will kill off any bacteria that converts the ammonia and nitrite!

Make sure you have another mature filter running if you are going to bleach the media!!!

yes i do have another one running, which is fully mature and cycled. I know i will kill off the good bacteria.

Maybe I'm missing something here but couldn't you just give it a good rinse out (with water) to get rid of them?

If you're bleaching the media as well then it would be difficult to rinse every last bit of bleach out of the thousands of small pockets in the sponge, I wouldn't risk it.

Ok, well just make sure you rinse it realllllyyyy well. No one else seemed to show much concern so maybe it's just me :dunno:

lol cheers. Yeah im just going to spray everything with the hosepipe and leave everything soaking in water overnight for about a week changing the water every night.

Thanks very much anyways, Adam

I know its all been done now but...

A good rinse under the tape would also have removed most of the bacteria. Bleach is guaranteed to kill everything in the filter media. Tap water had chlorine in and is just as bad.
