Wilds

$60 to $80! Oh My! What fortitude and discipline you have!!!

I am looking forward to seeing your baby's pics again when I can tell what they are.

It would be nice to have a little thread with your daddys' pics of each species and then one of their offspring for my education. B)

Someday, Sue. I'd love that, too. But sadly they're in tubs and I can hardly get a clear shot through the plastic. Also...they hide and I hate to disturb their mojo :p I haven't even seen my kapuas males in over a month. I see mama every day at feeding time, they just like to lay low so I let them do their thing.

My kapuas babies are big enough that I no longer have to sweat, I think. I used to take a deep breath when I saw the mother out and about, but tonight I saw one juvie swim right down beside her, fearless :dunno: It was quite awesome, really. He was like "Oh, there's mommy" and swam right up to her.

On to why I'm posting- so far the mahachai male has quite a nice little brood  I'll guess 25'ish. They're in the tank with the four adults, very well fed adults mind you, and the babes stay towards the top cruising around. So cute! Dad doesn't watch them as closely but I noticed him tonight herding them into the floating plants to sleep. Other than that I rarely see him at all now. This might work out.

Inspiring.

Keep them coming. Some day I might have a place for a new species.

conratulations wuv or should i say grandma , keep the pics and info coming. you may need a bigger house for your growing collection lol,

It gets worse!
I just went to feed my mahachai babes, last night I noticed the dad had another nest full of eggs, the first spawn is less than a week old, come on! But I see less and less babies...I only saw four just then but they could be hiding, I counted over a dozen before I went to bed last night. He keeps moving his nest around, he's got it enclosed with floating java fern and he's transporting the whole thing around the tank. It's even better than the last one.

I'm taking them away this time. I already have a five gallon set up and waiting.

Thank you! I adore the wilds  This guys is nesting with such gusto, it's adorable. The fry hatched yesterday, lil Valentines Day babies. I notice the others hang out under and around the nest, they're what five days, a week'ish? I see a lot of them in the leaf litter just sitting around under the folds. I'm keeping the other adults very well fed- they have blackworms at all times . So, to recap, four adults, two male two female, twenty gallon'ish with tonsof cover and so far this is working out.

The new batch is plentiful  There's well over a hundred babies. I got an okay shot through that weird plastic..

and a horrible shot of one of the older fry. you guys might not even be able to see him :*)

EDIT.2/18
First batch of mahachai are growing strong. The second batch are free swimming about, I see them here and there but it's not hard to find one, so I assume theres many. Now, the second male has a nest of eggs. I think I might need to cut these guys off the blackworms!
More exciting than that- my simplex is holding again. Right after a hard freeze, just like last time. I guess they really DO like cooler weather.

edit..

Day four and counting!!

As for the mahachai, I've noticed the first two batches of fry are hanging out under and around Daddy #2's nest with no arguements from him.

Gah, simplex swallowed. Last night I snuck in and yanked the female out, I saw the male acting very agitated towards her and he'd also taken position under the driftwood which is where I'd hoped he'd go. So, this morning he was empty mouthed. I assume he swallowed.

The mahachai are at it again. I walked in this morning to find male number two wrapping with the female, as male #1 looked on and waited beneath his nest :S

So this is like the fifth batch of fry in a week...

Salt and oak leaves, plus an abundant amount of blackworms. I guess they're content although I'm about to rock their world. The first few groups of fry are getting pretty big (for bettas) and I don't want the newer daddy to freak out on them when his eggs start to hatch so I'm about to cup as many as I can. They're hanging out around a plant so I'm going to just grab them and chunk em in a small 2.5 for now.

I'm bummed about the simplex :( I've looked and looked just hoping to see a fry, but no. This might have been my last chance with them. I'm almost considering putting them in a tub outside when it warms up a bit.

Congrats on the additional batch of eggs and more fry!!! *Does a dance*

Really sorry about your Simplex though. ;_; Seems to me like the mouthbrooders are harder to breed.

Ok, I have to ask... Do the oak leaves have any effect other than leafy-litter for top cover? do they add anything like IAL would? I'd never seen that set up, might be something I'd consider for my tank full of fusca juvies :)

Gooo mahachai! :hyper:
Pretty soon you'll have fry comin' out your ears :fun:

It's a shame about the simplex, though. I'm thinking of getting some and trying them myself, along with possibly some brownorum... I have two 10 gallons I can free up for wilds at the moment, the temptation is just too great! After having such great success with the albis I'm inspired to try something harder.

The simplex are a bit tricky, I don't know why. I swore that this time I'd leave the female in but then I'd watch her swim up to him and ...I dunno...it seemed like she wanted a bite of whatever he was holdin' I didn't trust her, and he didn't seem to either. But then as soon as I pull her out he's peering through the glass with puppy dog eyes.

I'm pleased with the mahachai. I pulled out about 20+ fry and then I saw a good dozen in the parents tank right off the bat so I'll try them in both spots. Some in a grow out- some with their parents.

bettabelieveit, Yes it makes the water more acidic with a natural brown tint. They seem to like it, all of my wilds have tons of leaf litter like that. I've kept them that way for months with no problems. I do get a ton of water fleas (even after boiling and microwaving) but the fry eat those.
