OK. Since some of you know we all had a bit of an arguement over me getting an oscar for my rio 180.

Anywho.

I Found out yesterday that oscar was indeed Wild caught.

i would get some pictures. But he hid and would'nt come up to the tank.

I Asked how much he was out of curiosty, and the guy said "Oh. We Pre-sold him a few hours ago. the guys just buying a new tank as we told him he's two foot tank was way too small" ( i was amazed. they ACTULLY gave out correct infomation for once )

any who

I Heard indigoj brought Dave's Wilds.

And they too are beutiful.

so... do you think wild oscar's are more attractive?

Also Veiltail Oscars?? How are there tails made? i've never seen a veiltail.. so im curious. :good:

i myself think wild oscars are far more attractive than the 'man-made' varieties, but that of course is just my opinion, in general i don't like albino fish, i think red oscars are just far more plain than wild oscars and tiger oscars are more colourful if you like your reds, i only had them wild oscars a few weeks but i can say they are surprisingly colourful fish, similar patterning to your 'normal' tiger oscars but the markings are yellow/orange, with the red eyes and red tail spot hey are gorgeous fish.
i don't think any oscar compares to the wilds.
the veil tails are just bred to be like that, you start with wilds, then they bred the reds and tigers etc, they get a male and female with slightly longer fins than the rest, and then keep breeding the ones with the longest fins and eventually you get the veil tails (don't try it, it probably took a few decades!)
at bas today they had a tank of albino's and one was a veil tail and i don't think they look nice.
i would never suggest you get an oscar in a 180 but if and when you get a big enough tank (min 75 gallon) than i would recommend wild oscars, bit shy at first but in my opinion the best looking.

veiltails are ewwwww

I would like the veils more if their tail... Wasn't so stringy? If you know what I mean. And I think the wilds would be great if they were more green, like the whole body green, with black as an accent.

I just had to give my opinion on what I thought about the pictures in this thread. I think that the person who bought Dave's wild oscars has some BEAUTIFUL oscars in their avatar.

You seem to be VERY fond of Oscars, Knox. Are there any other New world alternatives you have thought about for your 180?

Thanks Betta Boy, the 2 in my avatar were less than 3" when that pic was taken.

I'll get a pic of the 4 together later, the wild ones are starting to get their colours back now after their eventful day of travelling yesterday and they are a rich olive green with yellow stripes and bright orange eye-spots. IMO they are equally as stunning as my captive bred pair but in a different way.

Hate the veil tails :( why does man have to mess to the extreme. An Oscar should not try to resemble a betta LOL.

Well Yea. Im Obviously fond of them since my mom had 3-4 in her 6ft tank ( approx 230 gallons?? ) I Might get a blood parrot. Dunno yet.

I just hate that man has messed about with nature to such an extent yet again.

The new O's are settling in nicely so far there are pics in the photo section.

I suspect these guys will learn to eat from hand, especially as the other 2 and the tyre track eel does. No reason why they won't with time and patience.

LFS Gave out some bad infomation then

I Will Look at these pictures :p :good: Hope all goes well with your wilds.

People seem to think Oscars are just one species, but there is infact tons of different types, just the type we see in the aquarium trade is the same type.

Would love to see a true Albino Oscar, they are out there but they are vewry rare and worth stupid amounts of money. (the white and red LFS Oscars are NOT albinos)

These are beautiful wild Oscars

as far as i could work out the wild oscars that indigoj now has were caught in peru somewhere.
i know there is numerous astronotus species but generally when people talk of oscars or wild oscars i think its pretty safe to assume they are talking of a.ocellatus, the others are next to never seen for sale, you would really have to look hard to find one.
i personally think its not wholly true to say that your average albino/tiger/red oscar is astronotus ocellatus as they are almost certainly produced from crossing different astronotus species, eg the red oscars you see a lot of are obviously some hybrid of the argentinian oscar where as the tigers are obviously some hybrid of the peruvian oscar.
as shorty81 pointed out there is numerous species of astronotus so the forms you see in your lfs almost certainly not ocellatus, but a hybrid.
