Wild maculatus platies...

Some other pics of my one of my wild maculatus platy species. These were caught by my friend Kees de Jong back in 2019 in Mexico. I was lucky to get a small group of the F1 from him. They're grey platies. There are specimens that have a marking on the caudal penducle. One is de "moon", which we know as the socalled "Mickey Mouse pattern". But officially it's wild mark and called "moon". But also specimens with a crescent mark on the caudal penducle and other markings on that spot.
They're not colorful but they're interesting to keep.

A number have been sold to the German wholesaler in ornamental tropical fish named "Glaser". But they changed the name into "Xiphophorus maculatus Tabasco". While the original name was "Xiphophorus maculatus, Chuco's place 2019". Named at the spot where they were caught.

It's interesting- color and shape are very attractive with fish, but over time I think the more important attraction to watching them is what they do. It's kind of like having a hot girlfriend- so great at first, but if she doesn't have other interesting traits, then the "tractor-beam of hotness" (to quote Talledega Nights) wears off.

Yes, fish don't have to be bright colored to me. I love the behavior of wild livebearers.
Yes, a hot girl without brains, is not that appealing to me. When I was a lot younger I was that shallow that looks were the number one to me. But while aging, brains and character is way more important to me than just good looks. And mostly, good looks will fade at some point.

It's interesting, When I was a kid, there was a store with a reputation for rare imports, and which low budget me used to buy platys in. Fish almost exactly like yours were always mixed in with the other colour forms and morphs in the very large platy tank he had. Your photos are very familiar. He used to say he imported directly from Mexico and Central America, mainly for Cichlids though. He (Mr Werner Nowak) was ahead of his time with that group.

I've seen him referenced as a first imported of CA Cichlid species in French language sources, so maybe he also got wild type platys. Lost history, as he is no longer living, and can't be asked.

Well, all wild populations of maculatus platies in free nature are one and the same species but it concerns color morphs of one and the same species. Just like all populations of the variatus platies are color morphs of one and the same species.
