No not the song, My question is why do my fish want to jump out of my tank? What motivates them to do it? And why does it always happen at night when the lights are off? -_- I raise this issue because this isn't the first time this has happened to me. None of them actually got out of the tank but when I sleep most of the time I hear splashing noises in my tank. It also happens when I top off my tank to the black lip. :/ . I have pretty much everyway out of my tank closed by something. Yesterday most of my fish had thoughts of jumping out. First it was the cardinal then it was the clown. The cardinal has been doing this for a long time, the clown not so much. Is there some sort of thing I'm doing to them that makes them want to do it or is it a natrual problem?

Maybe they don't like you

kidding ;)

Seriously... I have no idea... have they got plenty space? any other fish they might be scared of? Maybe they just do it because, well... fish jump.... it is probably nothing... :/

When it rains in the dry season on a river, the fish become "frisky". However this would not explain the same behaviour in an ocean fish. Although, Cardinals are eustarine fish though aren't they? I think that they may be eustarine and reef fish. :dunno:

It seems that by changing water conditions, or by turning lights off suddenly, we can provoke jumping in fishes. Maybe it would stop them from jumping if you did things more gradually....? :dunno:

They jump from fright, ie. sudden lights being switched on, or to escape predators. If you have a Dwarf Angel chasing a clownfish for territory, the clowns going to do everything to escape the torment, including "taking to the skies". Ive also heard water conditions can provoke a fish to become stressed and jump. Test all your water parameters, they could be awful. A Cardinal fish doesnt jump out of water for no reason, they are placid, calm fish. Somehtings disturbing him.

How can I turn my lights off gradually? The only 2 options are on and well off. Theres no in between :/ :X . It's a pretty good community tank. I don't keep anything that's terrotorial at all. Well I've heard that the clowns MAY be terrotorial at some point but i've seen no proof of it. -_-

Turn the tank lights off while sunset is coming, and just leave them off will the morning maybe? That kinda takes away from night viewing though... I've noticed the same behavior in my FW tank. Within 5 minutes of me turning off my tank lights my archer fish go CRAZY :S . I've thought of putting one of my textbooks on the lids cuz the bigger archer can knock the lid open if he really wanted to I think.

EDIT: Corrected some spelling.

What are exactly are actinic used for? I'm getting the Current USA orbit and it says that it has some weird sunset thing that comes with it.

Lol, you think your fish jump? Own a fairy wrasse , those things jump all the time. Fish usually jump when startled. Unfortunately, dimming our lights the way the sun dims is not very practical unless you have multiple tubes and turn them off in a staggered manner. Sudden changes in lighting will freak them out and possibly make them jump. Being chased away from a sleeping spot can do it too.

Yeah that's what I was thinking how can you pull off turning off your lights like sunset without having the frggin sun in your room. :S

Yeah, and those nasty complications like plasma and thermonuclear reactions

if you haven't got multiple aquarium tubes, get a table lamp or soemthing like that near to your tank, put it on a timer so it goes on a bit before your tank lights do then off a bit after, so when the lights go off they're not plunged into complete darkness, there is still some light in the area for a bit.

:D

Was going to say the same. I tryed it with my angels (they hate the sudden light change). Dident work for me they freak out every time. Maby just dumb angels
