Why people keep betta

see both of my bettas in 1gal tanks have undergravel filters and the air pumps are on valves so i change it. i take their tanks apart like 1ce a month but i check the water parameters like once a week to make sure everything is ok also if you see my tanks i make a 1gal like a paradise for them

You also need to remember that bettas we keep (aside from short finned and wilds) have long heavy fins. They are also very very territorial. Large tanks are very stressful for a betta who has to carry all that finnage around to patrol his territory. Bettas kept in large tanks tend to live much shorter lives. I really think these two factors play a huge role in keeping bettas.

I personally have a couple fish who's fins are so heavy they have to have lowered water levels even in 1 gallons in order to come to the surface to breathe

I have found from experience that, all Bettas are different.

Agreed heavy Finnage Bettas require less water due to the weight of the fins.

Shortfin Males Although faster and More Agile do Prefer Bowls and Smaller Tanks.

Tooo Many Fish in a large Tank = More Patrolling and More Flaring = Higher Metabolic arate and Tus Shorter Life Span.

Bettas do Prefer Smaller Livinf Quarters within which there is Minimal to 0 Surface Movement.

Still Water Lets them Build their Nests and that was always an Indicator to there Temperament.

Also Meant Cleanliness was easier to Maintain.

Mr Grumps is Sulking ATM As he has No-one to Flare At apart from the Cat, So I might take a Trip to the Crowntail LFS @ the Weekend.

show him a mirror and watch the flare .. but dont leave it there coz if you do the fish can stress to death .
something to think about if a fighter only lives for an average of two years and die from obesity because they need a high quality food and they have been known to live a lot longer with a strict diet and regular regulated excersise .then what is worse for fighters. to get no excersize and be with no space and fed well ? or to be in a comunity tank and get a good diet and get to chaseing and excersizing and not die from obesity???
oh the mind boggles . i guess it would have to be up to the individual fish...
