In my 30gal tank, the water smells extremely bad. It doesn't seem to have any affect on my fish, but that doesn't make the expierience any more enjoyable for me. :-(
I just changed the gravel in my tank, and the water has been completely cycled.

Would any of my fish cause the water to smell bad. You can see the list of my fish in my signature.

I also have some mollys, and two gold striped plecos.

Also how do I get rid of the smell. I've tried dooing water changes but the stench keeps coming back.

Any help would be appriciated. :D

Clean the filter out with tank water. Food rotting in the filter will cause it to smell. Don't over feed and or rem to clean the filter IN TANK WATER never sink water. You will kill the good guys. GL

look under the hood at you light mabe it had algea building up mine i gross when i dont clean it just a suggestion.

A tank should smell...hmmm,musty? But not bad. Maybe it's your dechlorinator?

Another thought. Do you have any driftwood or anything else in the tank that may be decaying or releasing something to add to the smell? How long ago did you first notice the smell? Has anything changed significantly near that time?

Heh completely off topic but I love the way the adverts at the bottom of the pages scan for commonly used words in the post to show a relevant advert. All this talk of 'smell' has given me a delightful advert for "Get Rid of Vaginal Odor - Women use Smell Fresh to eliminate feminine and vaginal odors naturally"

My tank smells like ponds and camping.

Eggy smells is a sign of rotting plants and amonia I think. Looking under the hood might be an idea or checking the filter. Although, I don't clean my filter until I notice a drop in the water pressure coming out of it.

I know where you guys 'n'gals are coming from.

A month and a half ago, my tank was starting to smell a little 'eggy', so decided to have a good clean-out of my substrate. After removing the gravel, I was shocked at how much decomposing waste was left behind. Perhaps, this could be a consideration for you?

In addition, I had set up three sets of cleaning rota:

1) Twice weekly 10-20% water changes
2) Quarterly 'cleaning out' schedule
3) Fortnightly3-weekly filter pad changes

My tanks now smell like what I think they ought to....pond-like with a hint of fish.

i do all the things u guys tell me and it still doesn't seem to get much better. I have added some new live plants and rocks. I know what my tank is suppost to smell like. But not like this.

Don't mean to doubt what you have said, but if you've made all of these changes, I'm still surprised the smell hasn't lessened in the very least. Could it be that the smell isn't coming from your tank but from something else close by? Perhaps a fish had jumped out and is decomposing nearby?
