i can't figure out what is wrong with my fish
can you help me diagnose it?
he's a betta and his fins have patches around the ends that look brown and crumbling like a dying flower petal
i couldn't think of anything but fin rot but there are no red sores or white edges!
is this just another ugly face of fin rot?
have you guys seen this before?

Kitty,

It sounds like fin rot to me. How old is your betta?

Mine started to deteriorate just before he died. I had him for almost 3 years.

i dunno,
i just bought him a couple of weeks ago
but he has really long finnage
is it contagious?

I would say it's fin rot as well. The edges of the fins should only be white if it is "new", and brown or black if it is infected. I could be wrong on that though.

What else is he in with? Is he in his own tank?

he's in his own 3 gallon bowl
he was just transfered from a 1 gallon and he is much happier/ active
he was being quarantened to put him into a tank but i don't know is he is contageous

one more quick question.........
if brown or black means that it is infected,

then does that mean that the fin rot is gone and just the infection remains?
and if it is just an infection should it be treated with melafix (antibacterial and wound healer) or specific fin rot meds?

hehehe i guess that was more than one question

So, the edges of his fins are now white/clear? No black at all?

"GENERAL INFO:This disease comes mainly from dirty water. If you keep his water VERY clean Mr. Betta will never get tail/fin rot. It is not overly contagious, and bettas will more than likely recover if treated promptly. Fins/tail will grow back, though may not have same color or may not look as good or be as long. "

"SYMPTOMS: Betta’s fins and/or tail seem to be getting shorter and shorter. Or they seem to be falling apart and dissolving. There may be a darker color (or a reddish one) to the edge of the betta’s fins/tail. He may be still active and eating normally, or may have stopped eating, fins may be clumped, color may be pale."

no, its near the end but not on the edge of the tail and its about a half a dime sized brown spot that looks like a crumbling dead flower petal :X
his water is clean and i have never seen any red/white spots on him
the pet store has been known to keep them in dirty little cups though
his finnage is long so he MAY be old but i've only had him a short while :dunno:

his fins are the same length as they've always been and the crust isn't seeming to be spreading...
so you still think its fin rot?
well i guess i'll go shopping for meds then...
it never hurts to get extra meds ;)
they always come in handy down the road :D
