I know I dont NEED salt in the tank..but I have been told by many many people that they put some salt in. As is seems to help in the overall health of the tank.

The question was how much do some of you guys/gals use????

years ago when I was not a fish keeper a friend had a huge tank and I recall being there when her dad did a change and he put some salt in too.
I dont recall what types of fish he had ...and I know that my neons and swordtails seemed to be better and brighter after I added some...but then I added some bettas and gouramis to the tank...now ...salt? howmuch ? do any of you do it?
tank 40gal. ph 6.8... soft to medium hardness (its been awhile). temp 76. Plants and rocks and things.

I dont use salt in my main tanks, but sometimes in my treatment tank, if Im not treating catfish. For good advice regarding salt in the aquarium, read this.

I've tried salt myself in the past and found no difference at all. My fish never got sick before I used it, they didn't when I used it. Color stayed the same too. Needless to say I didn't use it for long, I found it a waste of effort.

The one single most important aspect to keeping fish colorful and healthy is clean water - there is no additive that will substitute regular water changes. I've been keeping fish for 15 years now, and haven't had a single health problem in my tanks in about 12, adding nothing at all to the water except dechlorinator. Keep it clean and simple - do water changes, vacuum, and maintain the filters, and you will have no problems B)

I have to say I agree with thecichlidaddict and do the exact same as he mentioned.
Not sure if some fish thrive with salt or not and know some very knowledgable keepers that do use it, but I never do.
