Why do you like this hobby?

For me I love animals. Keeping fish is something I can do at home with my daughter. She is only 1 but she can enjoy fish too. I also like the biology of it too you learn a lot.. Well kept tanks also look good and are fun to watch. They keep me busy as if my family is not enough work. But you know what I mean.

Well, I like having animals, and there is such a variety of colors and species, plus it gives you something to do.

i originally got my fish to teach my 3 and 5yr old children some responsability but i ended up getting picky about my fish and then over protective...lol. i have 2 tanks in my room now. so now my reson for keeping them is bc they are my living work of art! i can lock myself in my room after a long day of work and chasing my kids around and just relax and watch my fish swim around and all my stress from the day just melts away! fish keeping is very theraputic for me!

1. I love the challenge of keeping a healthy, beautiful, well planted tank. I love the science that goes into it. I love learning about fish and fish keeping.

2. I love how peaceful it is. I can watch my tanks for hours!

3. Although i don't really concider most of my fish as "pets", bettas are an exception to this rule and Edgar makes a wonderful little cold blooded companion!

Well, fish intrigue me and I want to be a Marine Biologist. You can customize a tank almost any way you want. Fish are beutiful in their own way. Releives stress. Can be a good centerpeice in a room. Some fish have their own personality. They make you laugh. You have something to do. You can mix and match many fish in right conditions. Fun to watch cichlids care for offspring. Feels good to think you created life in a glass rectangle full of water. There's my 2 cents.

1. I've slowly became a massive fish geek since the age of 8 when I got goldfish as my first pet, and promised I'd do my best trying to learn everything I needed to know to keep them alive and happy.

2. Became very interested in the science behind aquariums, and now have a place at uni doing Marine and Freshwater Biology.

3. There is an art element to a lot of aquariums, such as nature-aquarium style planted tanks that really appeals to my creative side.

4. Setting up an aquarium often involves some DIY and buying shiny gadgets like external filters and stuff, which appeals to my creative/man/geeky sides.

5. The appearance and/or behaviour of lots of aquarium inhabitants is interesting/funny/cute, appealing to my geeky/girly sides.

6. Doesn't really apply to me, since my room is too cluttered now, but a nice looking aquarium serves as a very impressive living ornament that becomes the centrepiece of a room.

7. IME there's not a tonne of things that can beat the relaxation that sitting back in a nice chair, with a beer and viewing a nice looking aquarium brings.

I think I've covered all the reasons lol.

"/thread" :p.

I like having creatures to nurture and look after. It's a hobby where you can be constantly learning new things, enjoying both the scientific and artistic aspects, and looking ahead to new ideas / tanks / stocking. Fish provide a welcome distraction from work and life, and they are always there waiting when I get in from work.

Think my reasons have already been said, it's just my hobby really it's really satisfying to see a happy healthy tank and know you've created a whole little world that you have complete control of. Plus i get casual work out of it so it's all good (expensive once you have 7 tanks mind  )

I like the design element of setting up a tank. If I had fish in a (no offense, just not my thing) tacky tank with neon gravel and a bubbling diver that would be no pleasure at all.

i've always liked animals, so fish are another pet, only i can keep them in my room. also it is quite creative aquascaping your tank, and sometimes i try to draw my fish, although i am not a very arty person, but i'm getting better. i also love learning about the needs of the fish/plants, probably got that from my mum (who is a biomedical scientist). and there is nothing better than returning from school to find a pair of kribs swimming about guarding their babies, and going crazy telling everyone who'll listen! :D

i've kept fish near enough all my life.

so many coulers.

so nice to watch.

Like having new members of the family :)

I started because it was considered a good move to help my son theraputically. Once I got past the usual early mishaps it was a much loved tank. I still have it up and running in fact, no matter what other other tanks have come and gone over the years.
I now have two other tanks downstairs, both showcases in very different ways and both beautiful, although the larger tank seems to grab the most attention.
Have loved the different challenges I've faced when breeding or trying new set-ups etc. Now, since I have little time to spare I can just enjoy them as they are, being well matured and established tanks with generations of fish.

My kids brought home a painted turtle. They then thought it would be a good idea to breed guppies to feed the turtle. We ended up keeping the fish because they are fun to watch and the turtle eats Natural Balance dog food. I'm in need of buying more as we went through a bout of ICH and lost all but 3 :-(
