Why Do You Keep Fish?

Fishkeeping is the act of bringing together science and art to create a small world that serves as nuturing habitat from within and emotional conduit from without.
Well, that explains why I like it so much. I'm a biology major and an artist

You know what, I haven't got the foggiest. Well, I do, but how it started :S As far as I know we were walking around Pets @ Home and I said 'I wouldn't mind keeping fish'... Doh. 3g for xmas, got guppies (baaaad move), then got a betta. Then another. Then another. Then a 20g. Then more bettas. Then we get to now.... The personality, I suppose. Having kept hamsters a lot, sure, they might not be furry, but the bettas are far more reacting to me than any of the hamsters (unless they were biting me...). And I like having your own little eco system. I agree with the 'gardener' idea, I've just started the addicting hobby of pico planted tanks because I prefer my big tanks to be practical rather than beutiful...

My wife wanted a tank. I put my foot down and said "NO because you won't look after it"! :sly: So we went out and bought a tank - Hmmm, my authority worked well again!!!

Both of us are now very much into it all.

aw, there are some really beautiful replies here that are making me love the hobby even more!

to me it is so relaxing to watch the fish, and really interesting to see all the different personalities or characteristics that different species have

I've always wanted to keep tropical fish, since i was a little girl. I was never allowed of course as i was too young, so as soon as i hit eighteen, i bought a loft apartment and now have two tanks.
It started a few months ago with my juwel 96L and now i also have a 8 gal with my first betta. Both tanks are doing wonderfully, and i'm continually researching and learning new things.

It's a fun and relaxing hobby and everyone who see's my tanks says how wonderful they look, so i must be doing something right? Its deffinetly worth the time and expense, you can learn so much and you can be creative and i love to aquascape  of course, i'm just a beginner.

None of my friends or family have fish tanks.
I'm in love with water....I find it soo.....facinating! There are so many different aspect. So many things I would've never known if I hadn't gotten into fishkeeping.
I love boating, I love water sports (Tubing and Knee-boarding especially), I love little towns on the water, I like swimming, I love fishkeeping!

Why is a 1,000G planted tank so beautiful?
I think fishkeeping is like that question. There is no right or wrong answer. Some of us like fishkeeping for different reasons as the others, other like it for the same reasons asothers if that makes any sense. ;)

The reason i have fish is because it is so dam relaxing and peaceful to watch them... If you have had a stressful day at work/College all you need to do is get home and sit and watch them :) Its amazing how attached you can get to some fish  My male bolivain ram died on saturday morning and i actully really miss him swimming about :( I also feel really bad for the female too as shes lost her partner and she looks lost now... When i first got into fish keeping i saw people saying how they lost a fish and they were feeling down about it and i thought "its a fish" but once you get to "know" them its nuts

Kev

Its very relaxing and calming to watch the fish. Its a good way to calm down and kill som stress. Other times they are good for entertainment. I cant explain it but i love fish of any size or sort.
