Maybe it's just me, but it seems like alot of members breed their bettas.

I'm curious to know why you breed yours and what you do with all the fry.

Are you able to sell them? :dunno:

It seems like a very expensive venture that takes alot of commitment.

:)

You are right, it is expensive and a HUGH commitment. I do it as a hobby which is fun to me. It's very satisfying to have a successful spawn and raise those fry to Juvis and adults, it just amazes me! I plan to eventually show my fish and sell in auctions, aquabid and to the LFS.

Ditto everything!

breeding has been a lot of fun for us. it has given my wife something to do during the day while i am at work. she has been unable to work since coming to my country due to immigration rules (almost a year now) and it has been hard for her as she is used to working all the time. what we will do when she is able to work (now able to but presently looking) remains to be seen. it is a lot of work to sucessfully breed healthy vibrant bettas and we feel we have acheived our goals. we both love bettas but for us it is a hobby and not a moneymaking enterprise, we are happy when we are able to give or sell our fish to friends and local fish stores. we are members of our betta association and thus have contacts with other people interested in our fish so getting rid of them isn't a problem. once we have spawned 100% our own fish (meaning 2nd 3rd generation and not just someone elses stock) we will show them. our biggest challenge will come very soon when our crown tail spawn is ready to let go, many people have asked about shipping fish to them and that is something i am considering. i also have an aquabid membership but have yet to use it.

i really havent spent that much money on breeding them.. all ive had to buy so far is the 10g tank ($13)

the live food i got free when i bought fish online but they are still not here (been 4 weeks)

some liquid fry food was $2 and eggs are cheap too.. (feeding egg yolk)

i might have to splurge and get some bbs tho..

breeding them is fun... i have my first batch now.. about 100 or more.. too hard to count... i cant wait to watch them grow up.. not sure what im gonna do with them when they grow up.. i work at a pet store and could always give some to them... also i know people from around here on the forum that would take some... i guess i could always sell on aquabid too..

maybe make back the money i spend on all of them lol

Don't count on it  Just wait until all those mouths are begging for bigger, meatier, pricier foods  But I agree,it's fun

meh.. mine are about a week old now.. wont eat the liquid fry food... I NEED THE MICROWORMS ahhhhhhhhh..

yea.. i can just wait till they want bloodworms everyday :S

:D i breed for the enjoyment of it too, there's just something about watching your favorite type of fish grow from a tiny litlte dot to an adult with all the fancy finnage and pretty colors, each with their own personality.

I've thrown endless amounts of money into my fish (it just keeps going and going on ), but it's well worth it :) i'll porbably sell the fry to petstore, and give them away to friends, etc. Since my next spawn will be a nice pair of cts, if anyone's interested here i'll sell them here too, maybe on aquabid if the fry turns out :)

Now you've gone and done it, you made me sit down and figure out how much I've spent on Bettas! Lol So far I'm up to over $350 not counting food or the actual fish. And I got all my beanie containers (my barracks for my juvis) for free, my growout tanks used and inexpensive (45 gallon for $30 and the 20 gallon for $21, both with lights and covers). And lets see, so far I've made off my Bettas I've sold, a whopping $17, LOL!! (I've only sold 6 so far).

just today we visited a LFS with 8 of our fish just to see what the response would be and if they might be interested in them. we took 4 of our 2 month old crowntails, 2 super delta, 1 fighter and 1 doubletail. the response was good :D the guy is a wholesaler as well and said he would take all of our fish and was even serious about taking our whole crowntail spawn if we desired. we didn't bring him any of the double ray crowntail kids (i have realized that they are rare because only about a third of our spawn has so far ended up double ray) but he will pay twice as much for those as well. it's nice to give the money we made to my wife because she more than me is with them every day, feeding and doing water changes when i'm at work. we had a few LFS lined up to take our fish but i think we lucked out finding this guy, he was very supportive and said nice things about our fish and made all the work and fuss involved with breeding worthwhile. ;)

i do it for fun. i also just enjoy nature at work right in my own home. its so exciting being a godmother (i guess?) to lots of little fishies :)
as for money? noooo way. i cant count how much i spend on my fish but i can count a few tiny dollars i made off of a couple of them...err $20 in all perhaps?
i like to give my fish away anyways. selling them to petstores is basically sending them to their slow and painful death :(

kind of off topic, but...im big on the spay/neuter campaign for cats and dogs (and rabbits!) because offspring of unspayed animals takes up so much space in shelters. (well technically all of it.) i hate to see 20 ads in the newspaper everyday of people giving away kittens because they were too lazy/cheap to spay their cat. my boyfriend thinks im a hypocrite for breeding fish because of this but i tell him-i cant keep 500 cats in my house but i can keep 500 fish!

I totally agree.

The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago will do it for less than $50. There's no excuse for not fixing your dog or cat.

theres one state (virginia maybe?) that will fine you if your animal is not fixed unless you have paid for a breeding license. i wish all states would take that up...

sorry to get off topic...
