Why do people do this??? :(

It is just wrong, and the manufacturers of this stuff need to grow some moral back bone, they know what they are doing is wrong, shame on them.
But then surely all online sales for aquariums, equipment and livestock should be stopped too since they along with the manufacturers are feeding the desires of consumers too?

If that happened you would alienate a significant number of people from the pastime, possibly drive the trade off grid and potentially do even more damage to the fish bloodlines and the way they are kept.

Catch 22.

You can just remove the really bad stuff, surely.

How would you propose to enforce that though?

Until a pet fish is given the same protections as a pet hamster in regard to care, environment and abuse prevention, its not going to happen.

And that is what fish need.
I agree with you wholeheartedly

But you KNOW it will never ever happen cos fish are NOT seen as pets in the same sense that a cat, dog, hamster or even pot bellied pig is.

The status of fish will never change unless enough fishkeepers make enough noise and force it to happen......and in the last 50+ years absolutely NOTHING has changed and it will be that way long after you and I have left this world.

Fishkeeping has always been unregulated and it always will be simply cos a fish does not get the same recognition that every other pet does.

That is why millions of fish can be caught in the wild and only thousands put into aquariums, because nobody cares or realizes the fatality rate of these imported fish. It is pathetic and the reason that I only keep fish that are tank raised.

The trouble is that there are no fixed rules worldwide in regard to the husbandry, breeding and selling of fish, in the same way any manufacturer of a glass vase can call it an ornamental aquarium and advertise it as such on sites like Amazon and eBay

Such as...

A million times worse than the Ciano Nexus Pure 14 litre but still readily available and bought without so much as a consideration to how the poor animal will feel.

Here is another example of what is bad......and the aquariums (if you can actually call them that) will make anyone who loves fish absolutely furious

If I had control over things, I would ban all wild caught fish, then I would regulate what is or is not an aquarium. Then you can move to regulate what may or may not be kept in a certain type of tank.

I do not believe it will ever be 100% regulatable, there will always be a percentage of "under the table" trade just as with any animal or any living thing tbh

That said, the standards observed in the various countries around the world could definitely be vastly improved along with enforcement too.

I don't think people in authority actually want to make changes though...a fish is a fish...its not cute and cuddly.....they are not held in the same level of respect that other animals are given.

It's funny. If I were brutal dictator of the world, it's farmed fish I would go after. Sustainable wild fisheries support families of fishers. A researcher friend of mine noted that when she visited areas where freshwater stingrays were collected for the aquarium trade, there were lots of stingrays around. Where they weren't collected, they were shot on sight because of their venomous spines, and she couldn't study them. She couldn't find them.

If there were regulated tank sizes, you'd have people whining about "Nanny States".

As a set of societies, we generally have the view that animals are here for us to make use of, rather than animals are here with us as creatures we share habitat and a future with. As long as we think we have dominion over our fellow creatures, we'll treat them like we do. It would take a major change in how we see our world for us not to be inclined to buy tiny tanks and gimmicky decor that mistreats other animals, because it's pleasurable.
