Why a Betta?

My bettas got to know me, but they aren't the only fish that can do that; my cichlids recognise me as well. Still, I find my convicts are a lot more hyperactive than bettas and, believe it or not, far more aggressive! I had a pair of male bettas once that just liked to go to the divider and study each other. No flaring, no bravado, just a couple of guys chatting over the backyard fence, lol :p I really find they're a very peaceful fish to watch, in part due to finnage and in part due to their slower movements. It's that perfect combination of character and regal beauty that really makes them a delight to own.

Bettas are like minature dogs, they get all happy and jump about when they know you. :p They are "people-fish," they love to be around people. Just go to any store and stand by the bettas, their eyes watch you. Usually they'll wiggle for you too! They have SOOO much personality. Even the females who can be dirt brown colors, I'd love to have them because they are so friendly and happy (if treated right).

They are definately an interactive fish rather than a pretty flash in a glass. :fish:

i have read in multiple places that they are the only fish that can reconize their owners.
Nah, plenty of fish can do that, but bettas are probably some of the cheapest/smallest ones capable of it. :)
Both my oscar and midas hybrid recognise me, and I think my honey gourami does too. I've heard goldfish recognise their owners as well.

in love? HA! you wouldnt know what love is till you have a betta. do your self a favor. go to walmart randomly pic 2 bettas get food take them home put them somewhere where they will see you alot. within a week youll notice 2 completely fish not jus their colors but the way they act when you talk by. my betta when some one sits down will act all happy then after a sec or 2 hell settle down but if i sit down next to him he swims UP an DOWN the glass untill i feed him(im Mr.Food). i would have to say he definatly has more personality that all 7 of my barbs put togather an even more then my 8'' oscar that ive had for 3 years.

My Comets recognize me when I walk near the tank so does my Jack Dempsey. But bettas are deffinately the cutest when they recognize you. They swim all over doing the "Feed me Feed me!" dance. You just have to love them!

lol i just realized i hear ppl say there bettas do a feed me dance. mine doesnt it jus looks at me an holds still untill a feed him...thats not really an dance....

Just today my Betta "scowled" at me for ruining his bubblenest because he had to have a water change.(He has finrot at the moment :( )
I didnt want to, but how do you explain to a Betta? lol I'll give him a pea to make up for it... :p
They do have personaility. You have to take one home, and see for yourself though, because at most stores they are in horrible quarters and are very unhappy.

I'm a beginner at this and my pet shop aquarium "expert" said it would be okay to put 3 danios in with Sammy the blue betta (3 gall tank). They were all okay for a few weeks, but Sammy didn't look happy - kept trying to hide in corners and inside a shell. Then the biggest male danio killed the other two - it was horrible - I caught him ramming one of them until it was bleeding. Tried to rescue it but too late. I took out the last danio and Sammy is back to his old self - no more hiding. Seems a lot happier. From now on I'll check with people on this forum before doing anything!
