Who's Removed Heaters From Their Tropical Tanks

I don't run heaters in any tank but my fry tank at the moment and they all stay between 74-76 degrees. The fry tank is in a room that gets a bit colder. The only real difference that I have noticed is that the fry seem to grow faster, be more active, and are more colorful in the heated tank than fry raised in the unheated tanks.

That's a good point. The warmer temperature raises their metabolism, and this will make them eat more and grow faster than they would have in cooler water.

ive taken mine down to 20oC and it rises to 24-25 in the day, and guess what my neons and corydoras spanwed on the same day, and so far the neon fry are alive! after two weeks, im well chuffed!

but i only did this after my ram died as most dwarf new worlds probably wont appreciate it

Sounds interesting but I prefer to keep my temp in my main tank at around 83.5F only cause I house discuss and its planted. As far as breeding goes I have always used a heater, temps here can get as cold as 65F so I probably wouldn't go without using a heater at all

I don't use them, even with more expensive brands they don't keep the temperature constant and I'd rather it be a bit cooler than risk poached fish.

i have a drafted old home so i must keep my heaters running during the winter. however during the summer months when it gets hot in my room i shut my heaters down because the fish tanks stay at a reasonable temp.

Heater went doolally on my tank & temps plummetted. All fish OK apart from my prize Bolivian Ram. He started floating about nonchalantly in a daze, so to speak - it was this behaviour that prompted me to put my mits in the tank and hey presto, 'crikey it's colder in there!!!'

Another heater back in & he seemed to cheer up, but took no food and just sat there, no interest in things. Week later he swam off to the great fish-pond in the sky

So I guess its a case of gently gently, where you live and what fish are in there....

one of my mates heaters broke in the night and the temp kept riseing and when he woke up in the morning the temp was like 40 and all his fish were dead

What I ask myself is why are these heaters so typically crap. It's not exactly bloody rocket science is it??? Bimetallic strips... didn't Harrison invent those (OK, the rod-iron, but same principle) in the 16th centuary?

LOL

Living in the North East of England, its not unusual for my living room to be 10C on a morning before the heating kicks in.

I have to use 2 300W heaters to keep my Rio 300 up at 30C.

Remember though, just because the heater is plugged in and set to 25C, doesn't mean that it is "on". If the room is warm enough, the heater won't switch itself on at all. Its just a safety net.

my front room would gert cold but at night but i just leave the house thermostat set to 20 degrees and it clicks on and off when it wants day and night - as if i get cold i get too much pain and too many spasms

bumping just to see if anyone else has removed their who hasnt yet replied :) i'm finding this very a interesting read

Very interesting. After reading this i'd be tempted to knock my heaters off but...........i'm scared :-(

My house is just not warm enough most of the time for it to be safe for me to turn off the tank heaters. They are plugged in and on - but obviously they only come on if the tank water drops below the set temp. Some days they come on a lot, other (warmer) days they are barely on at all.

As I live by the coast (and I mean the sea is just a few mins walk away) it is quite chilly during the night and early mornings with temps below freezing - and with the recession (and soaring bills) I can't have my heating on all day and night. I limit it to 2 hrs in the evening.

So, no, I couldn't turn off my tank heaters!
