I was using water conditioner religiously for the past 7 months, but a few weeks ago I run out so done a 50% waterchange with just tap water, haven't had any problems or fish losses and water stats are the same, so makes me wonder how useful this stuff really is.

ive seen fish gasping at the surface after a large waterchange with pure tap water (none have died though), so i dont risk it. not a pleasant sight

I know there's one or two people on here who don't think it's necessary but the way I see it is it's a cheap and easy way to make doubly sure (besides everything else) your water is good.

I do not use water conditioner regularly,
and well, regular maintenance water changes should not have to be done on the large scale unless their is something going on in the tank....

for my regular water changes (at most 25%) i have never seen any ill effects whatsoever. No gasping, no darting...so in think in moderation it is fine.

if i was to ever do a LARGE water change....say more than 50%, I might add some conditioner to just ease the stress a large water change may cause in general.

Yes I use it, because I know my clown loaches are sensitive to water quality. Plus I feel it doesn't do any harm so it is just a precaution.

I always use it-havent in the past and it hasnt done any harm but it was on offer in a maidenhead aquatics store some time back so i got lots of it. I would recommend it-especially if you mix some warm water with your cold in the winter so you get the temperature similar to your tank. If any dissolved copper is in your water from the hot water tank, the conditioner will neutralize it as such.

If the tap water had a high amount of chlorine dissolved in it and you did a large water change this could potentially wipe out your biological media in your filter leading to an increase in ammonia ,nitrite and poor water conditions hence the cloudiness. I know i've been there...you live and learn. :good:

I answered yes, as I do use it on my main tank, but my 8 litre at work gets water from the filtered water cooler, and this does not need any further treatment :)

I always thought it was a must? Either way, im going to continue using it accordingly.

James.

I just read on here how the chlorine itself may not hurt your fish, but the chlorine can mess up the good bacteria in your filter. In some areas you can probably get away with just letting a bucket of sit for a few hours without conditioner, but I know in my area some people get a lot of built up minerals and such in the water. What is it that turns silver metal to that awful brown color? We have this problem at work.

I use it (and always will) on my tank because I have city water... but have NEVER used it in my moms tank because she has well water......
