Who Has A Penguin, Biowheel Filter?

~$39, plus they are offering a $10 rebate right now. (Of course, I am going to have to replace my 350 as it is too wide for my tank. The 350 is 14.5 inches wide and the space in my tank is only 13.25 inches, thanks to the brace across the top of the tank. I am looking to get two 200s instead. Good side is that the circulation rate will actually be a little higher, and I won't have to shut off both filters to clean them... the bad news is that they will require separate outlets. :/ All things considered, it's not a big deal, once I get the new stuff...

will the penguin fit a jewel rio 125?
or will there be issues with this ?

Given that the filter I bought didn't fit into my tank, I'm not the best person to ask!

i think this with
Activated_Carbon_4d3db66590919.jpg

maybe you could get 2 bags of these in a small penguin :hey:

im getting the 350 i think it is. maybe get 4 bags of this media in the back for maximum bio filtration

Like I said, the 350 is 14.5 inches wide. If you have that much room in the tank, then You shouldn't have a problem. But, you're on your own from here on out!

I'm not sure what you mean about the "bags".

If you mean the cartridge (the piece that contains the carbon), then I think they are a fine size. The 350 has two sides to the filter, so it actually has double the surface area than a 200. The biowheels are also a very nice size and seem to offer a large surface area for bacteria. I've not used another filter, so I don't have a basis for comparison, nor have I tried this one with a large bioload, but it is cycling nicely.

My dad used a Whisper HOB for a 20 gallon tank when I was a teenager that used a "biobag" cartridge. It worked fine, and was a smaller size. I will also mention that we overstocked that tank, based on what I now understand about proper stocking limits.

the bags i mention are on page 1 of this thread lol
at the bottom.

keep me posted as to how your idea gets on please mate. :good:

I have been using penguin biowheel filters for almost 20 years. I think they are great, but I am in the process of replacing all of my HOBs with canister filters.

I see you updated a post.

Yeah, I don't know how many would fit. I would say that one should fit on each side easily, but I'm not sure. Maybe two. There is no dimension mentioned there. The bag isn't really necessary for the filter to work properly with the ceramics, it will just make the process easier for cleaning the cartridge floss. When taking the cartridge out, the ceramics would just fall all over the place. Having them in a bag would only simplify the process. That's why I am looking to get a bag that will hold the ceramics, but not actually add any additional layer of mechanical filtration. That job should be done sufficiently by the cartridge. Secondly, adding additional media for the water to go through before getting to the ceramics would decrease their effectiveness, IMHO. Again, though, I haven't used them yet, but am just conjecturing based on my limited knowledge base of how the filter is configured.

I haven't got the ceramics yet, but I am looking at this one.

I don't know if this is ideal, but if it is a porous bag like the front shows on the back, then it looks perfect. :good: If not, I think I will just put them into a old onion bag or something similar.
this looks great, i think the onion bag idea is godd also or some stockings maybe.

i have seen this stuff in my LFS and may have to price up a penguin after hearing all this.

The stocking might get gunky. A garlic bag would be good though. I should mention that the cartridge should be in front of the ceramics in the filter.
you mean the carbon filter in front of the ceramic media?

I wonder how high the colours go!

I have a 100, a 200 and a 350 and I LOVE my Penguins. The 100 I got "free" when I bought a used 10 gallon tank for $10. That was my introduction to Penguin. The 200 I paid about $18 for on Amazon. The 350 was a whopping $31 shipped, but only $4 out of pocket thanks to free gift cards. :D I love Amazon.

Carbon and zeolite are used because it helps folks who DON'T properly cycle their filter.

Here's the link. $1.40 each plus shipping...

Oooh, thanks for this! I've been wondering where to get mechanical filters without carbon!
