hes been being funny last day or two... but today i noticed white spots all over him.

he keeps letting himself get sucked up by the filter coz of lack of energy.

did i do this right?

I did a big water change... about 80% and started a course of protozin. turned the temp down to 24 from 26.

Off course there is a difference in "white spot" and "Ich"..... This sounds more like "ich" cause of the temp fluctuations you admit to....Raise your water temp back to the (at least) 33 degrees C and keep it there for 3 days (Geezz!! I'm repeating myself) and then slowly reduce to 26 degrees... If it is indeed "ich", this will help......

there havent been temperature fluctuations...

i just thought that bacteria and stuff spreads faster in hotter water, so i figured if i turned it down a bit itd help him get better quicker? is this not the case?

but apart from turning the temp down on purpose earlier, there havent been fluctuations.

what is the difference between ich and whitespot?

and isnt 33c rather hot? my betta likes 26! sorry to question you, i just wont learn if i dont ask :)

Yea... 33 is "rather hot" but as I said, I'm repeating myself. Ich is a little parasite that thrives in colder conditions and reproduces in these conditions. When the temp is raised, this little parasite cannot survive or reproduce and where it has an incubation period of (about) 3 days, the cycle is destroyed. Your 80% water change is huge and would've had a sudden temp change impact on your water... hence the possibilty of Ich "flourishing".

ok with you now.

just to clear up though, everything ive mentioned ive done, i did after i noticed the white spots on him. but like you said and I now understand, theyll have liked the drop in temp i caused...

also, i have turned my heater up to 32c now. is that ok? how long do i keep it up high, when should i start lowering it?

the protozin says treat on days 1,2,3 n 6. i presume i stick to this?

Increasing the temperature speeds up the parasite’s lifecycle. This causes it to develop quicker and die off sooner. However, the temp should only be raised after the medication has been added to the tank. If you turn the temp up and don't have medication in the water then the disease organisms grow faster and spread more rapidly, causing more damage to the fish.
You don't have to increase or change the temperature to treat the fish. I often leave the temp at about 26C and just treat the fish for about 10-14 days. "Waterlife Protozin" will work great on it.

Bettas should be able to tolerate 33C but it is preferable not to take the temp up that high if you can help it. Sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the fish and encourage disease outbreaks.

White spot & Ich are the same thing, an organism called Ichthyophthiriasis, (ich for short).
Velvet or Oodinium is caused by a parasite called Oodinium.
Whitespot is about 1mm in diameter whereas velvet is about half that size and can have a golden sheen to it. Whitespot is an actual white spot. Marine Oodinium is identified by lots of very small white spots.

Both parasites are treated in the same way.

he has lotsa little white spots... but he keeps hiding where i cant see him clearly enough to get a pic or a good look.

the protozin says it treats both.

i turned it up to 33 a few mins ago, and added the first dose of protozin about an hour or two before that.

what temp shall i put it on? im so confused now!!!

it was on 26, then i did a big water change and didnt check what it changed to after that. like i said, it went upto 33 a few mins ago..

what should i leave it at?

waterlife protozin is the med that i have colin, it says treat days 1,2,3 n 6? would you advise differently?

at least 33 ????????? thats 91,duz anyone else think thats wrong?????

I would have the temp on 28-30C. The really high temps can cause the medication to break down quicker.

Treat the fish as suggested on days 1, 2, 3 & 6 and then treat him on day 8 & 10 as well if the spots haven't gone by day 3.
I usually treat the extra days just in case.

im confused again now :(

i googled it... 26 degrees c is 80f.

ill turn it back down to 26. im going to cook him...

*rushes to turn bazil off simmer*

Agree ... for 3 days and then gradually back to 26 degrees... Bettas are prone to a wide range of temps... have kept them in constant 18 degr to no detriment, but they prefer the 26/7 range.

rofl :)
sorry but that's a funny statement.

Male bettas are fine at high temperatures. In the wild they are often found in shallow pools where the water temperature hits 30C +.
Try to set the temp on about 28-30C then the parasite will die off quicker and the fish should be fine. Once you decide on a temperature try to keep it stabile for a few weeks before changing it. Then only change it by a degree or two each week.

ok.. ill put it between 28 n 30.. but 33 sounded huge.

hes going to shout at me you know.

]if he could...

you could put an airstone in the tank and he could have a spa. Either that of throw some veges in and cook him up properly :)
