Hi all, (been told to move this post here)

I'm new to this forum, basically I need a bit of advice.

A few weeks ago I bought myself a Juwel Vision 260 fish tank for my front room, internal filter and the rest.

Got it all set up left it for a bit, introduced the fish a bit at a time, everything seemed to be going fine, been up and running for around 5 or 6 weeks now.

Last night I got home and did a quick head count in the tank, then I noticed that my cardinal tetras were literally covered in whitespot. With it being 7pm I coundn't get any treatment until this morning.

Anyway I managed to get hold of some Waterlife Protozin

http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/diseasetreatments.htm

However as I was supposed to be at work this morning, not shopping for fish treatments (boss was supprisingly sympathetic when I rolled in late). I only managed to skim over the instructions and I didn't remove the carbon filter from the filter, the water now looks clear not the blue colour it was this morning.

Do you recon I should carry on using as directed or start from scratch with the treatment , or bang some more in tonight ?

Basically - what do I do now ?

Thanks all

Steve.

got home tonight to find 4 of my 5 tetras dead and the fifth is MIA presumend dead

what i would do is do 20% water change then remove your carbon and zeolite from your filter then follow the treatment to the letter, I am unfamilier with your treatment i tend to use methaline blue. but reading up sounds good and good look with the rest as it sounds like it has really got hold and good look

do you have anything that looks like a lot of white rock chippings, usually you have them in your filter or in your air tube cartridges on your under gravel filter, if so thats zeolite

I really feel for you at the moment. I just recently set up a little tank.....We have had many tanks for quite a few years now.
I had 15 cardinal tetras(I had never had them before) 10 glowlight tetras,3 ottos and 3 bronze cories.
I then purchased 4 loaches, that were going at a real bargain price for what they were(they were mis-identified in the shop).....but they came with whitespot(my first outbreak in years!!)
You really do forget how that ich can be so devastating.
I started off by using protazin.......but,sadly I have lost ALL my cardinals,3 of my loaches and 5 glowlights.
I switched meds after a big water change.....I am now using WS3 Whitespot terminator by King British.....which has worked wonders in the past.
I would suggest you take out your carbon and restart treatment after a large water change.
HTH. and good luck.xx.

dont think so, by air cartridges you dont mean the air bubble stones ?

To be honest I think Im zeolite free.

While im here Ive had 20L of water standing in buckets for over a week now, I was going to do a water change a few days ago but never got round to it, do you think it'll be safe to use.

if it is do I still need to put that water conditioner in ?

Cheers for all your help.

Yep it is devastating alright I would next time treat the tank everytime you put fish in to prevent this, check out this link it will explain the desease to you and hopefully help prevent it in the future:

I would recommend a regular 20%water change for that size tank.......54litres each week/fortnight depending on your fish.
Why do you let your water stand before putting it into the tank?

did you treat the water in the first place before it was left to stand?

the only reason I as is tap water is harmful to the skin and gill membranes so i would treat if you did not do in the first place

no I just used plain tap water, but I'll treat it anyway.

Thanks for your advice you've been a real help tonight.

No probs wot we here for, every1 here will need help at some point no1 ever stops learning, good luck

If the water has been left sitting for that long it might actually have excess ammonia in it due to airborne debris getting cought in it over that long timeframe. where was it kept? Do a test for ammonia if possible before adding it just to make sure.

In the absence of water treatments you can leave tap water to sit for 24-48 hours and an overwhelming majority of harmful chloramines, chlorines, and flourine (depending on where you live) will evaporate by that timeframe. And dont believe me when I say that, my best friend is a water treatment systems engineer so he should know . Ammonia however does not develop and decaying airborne debris (even particles the size of dust) can build up and lead to ammonia especially if the tank the water is in has a large uncovered surface area.

Everyone here is right though to suggest a large water change, removal of your carbon filter, and then begin disease treatment with fingers crossed.

Good luck
