I would, columnaris is a nasty infection. A general rule is you need to wait atleast two weeks after the last sign of illness or your last fish death before adding any more fish.

Ok, I picked up some of that tetracycline and a bottle of this other stuff, it says it helps with the natural film on the fish and helps prevent a cycle fom happening, the LFS recomended it, when I get home I will get the name of it. He said it helps, but sometimes the meds are too strong, depending on how established the tank is.

Wish me luck.
The guppy thats the worse now has a white band around her :( but she is still active and eating, I just dont know if its too late for her or not.

What the other med called.

What the other med called.

Its called "Stress Coat" Its not a med though.

EDIT just checked the stats now, about 10 hours after meds.

Ammonia - 0.3
Nitrite - 0.5
Nitrate - 20

What does that mean?

That means that the meds are afecting your tanks bio and sending you into a mini-cycle. Do you have a hospital tank to be treating in? Also, you want to begin doing daily water changes, before adding meds.

Stress coat will help the fish's slime coating, but it own't help the bacteria in the filter. Bio-spira is the bacteria you need, but that needs to be refrigerated constantly. Cycle is worthless.

Ok, I will try and find bio-spira.

I dont have a second tank. Its this or nothing unfortunatly.

The affected guppy (the one that was really bad) seems to have passed away from when i took the test and just befor this post. :(

I cant see any signs on any of the other fish. should I still medicate? or maybe even 1/2 or 1/4 dose? and still do the water change right befor?

With this mini cycle do I have to worry about this killing my fish too? or at these levels will they be ok?

I would say maybe switch to a less potent antibiotic, or even medicated food if you can find it. Using tetracycline is really hit or miss. Some people find it kills their bacteria, others find it inactive. Kanacyn (aka kanamyicn) is also useful agains this bacteria, and should be a little more gentle on your filter.

Here is some more info on treatment. I am not the author of this.

Treatment:

Ensure that your water conditions (e.g., Ammonia, Nitrite, pH, Nitrate levels, and water temp.) are within their proper ranges. If not, perform a water change and/or treat the water accordingly. Recommended medications include: Furanace, Fungus Eliminator, Fungus Cure, Furacyn, Furan-2, Triple Sulfa, E.M. Tablets, Tetracycline, or Potassium Permanganate. Medicated foods are also recommended. Columnaris can be highly infectious and may quickly kill all aquarium inhabitants; therefore, early treatment is essential. All fish, including those not yet showing visible symptoms, as well as the aquarium they inhabit should be treated.

Ok I got some EM Tabs. I assume I just drop them in the tank?

Well, i feel stupid now. I was curious what was in the EM tablets. THe info was taken from a page i trust, but have never used. The active ingredient in the EM tablets is eythromyicin (sp), the same ingredient in maracyn. Hopefully that means this won't do further damage to your filter.

It says on the package that it wont kill the benifial bacteria. So I have my fingers crossed.

I just put the carbon that I took out befor the meds back in last night after a 20% water change, its was used for only like a week, so I think it should still be good.

I took it out this morning and put in 3/4 of what it recomends. just in case there is still some tetacyclin in there.
then tomorrow i will do a full dose and do a water change when it tells me to. I cant remeber if it was right befor hte 3rd treatment or the 4th, or not till after. I will have to read the back again.

Ive had this problem before and all i did was sweat it out. (did nothing) because i was away for a while and never really noticed <=) but their ok.
